Lot west of Exchange deck to close;
project will lead to 426 more spaces
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
To keep up with growth, UA will begin to expand parking on the south side of campus starting Monday, March 16, when the surface lot west of the Exchange Street deck will be closed.  A six-level deck will be built in that area, creating 426 spaces.

parking mapFor the remainder of the spring semester and perhaps longer, the entrance to the Exchange Street deck from Exchange Street will move east to the Sumner Street intersection, opposite of where McDonald’s is located.

The surface lot between Schrank Hall South and Exchange Street will remain open.

Because parking on the south side of campus is tight, Parking Services offers this advice to motorists:

  1. Arrive on campus early March 23-26 to assure that you have time to find a space and get to your destination on time.
  2. Consider parking in one of the lots on the north side of campus and taking the free Roo Express shuttle to the campus center. See the North route stops. This map gives advice for parking based on the time of day you arrive.
  3. The East Campus Parking deck is also an excellent choice, as is the lot between The Chapel and Route 8. From those lots, it is a 5- to 8-minute walk to the campus center.

At a later date, the University will determine the best use of capital dollars to meet future parking needs. This report from the Parking Study Task Force will inform the decision-making process.

It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad, can't wait to embark on his dream tour of Europe. But when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) announce they can no longer subsidize his trip, James has little choice but to take a lowly job at a local amusement park. Forget about German beer, world-famous museums and cute French girls-James' summer will now be populated by belligerent dads, stuffed pandas, and screaming kids high on cotton candy. Lucky for James, what should have been his worst summer ever turns into quite an adventure as he discovers love in the most unlikely place with his captivating co-worker Em (Kristen Stewart), and learns to loosen up.

Come out on March 24th to see this hilarious comedy that has not even been released to theaters yet! The movie will begin as soon as the 7:17 down in the Starbucks lounge featuring FLOREZ concludes. Arrive early to get a seat!

Try Orienteering on campus! March 28
11:00 am - 3:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The first ever University of Akron campus Orienteering event will be offered Saturday March 28, 11 to 3 PM. Using a map and compass, you’ll try to travel the most efficient route between about a dozen marked locations on a detailed campus map. For competitive athletes, you’ll be making decisions about the best path from point to point while running hard for 15-30 minutes. The winner won’t always be the fastest runner, but the person who can navigate and think clearly at speed. For those who don’t want to race, orienteering can also be a relaxing way to add some variety to a leisurely walk, seeing areas you might not visit otherwise. Or try orienteering as a team, working with friends to keep track of where you are and where you’re going. Racer or stroller, all are welcome! This is a great and convenient chance to try a new and exciting sport right here on campus.
There will be three courses – Beginner, Short, and Medium. Try one, or do them all! Registration is $5 / map (teams may want more than one map), and will be open March 28 from 11-2 outside the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Starts can be any time from 11-3 (each entrant’s start time is staggered so you don’t just follow the person in front of you!). Instruction, maps, compasses to borrow, and information about orienteering in the woods will also be available. Sponsored by Recreation & Wellness Services, Outdoor Adventure and the Northeast Ohio Orienteering Club. For more information, Dr. Randy Mitchell (x5122, rjm2@uakron.edu) or John MacDonald (x8028; jam3@uakron.edu).

Changes in Income Tax Withholding coming in April. April 1
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Payroll Office will begin using new Federal Tax Tables effective April 1, 2009. New withholding tables may reduce the amount of income tax withheld from your wages.

The new tables, prescribed by the Department of the Treasury, reflect the Making Work Pay credit and other changes resulting from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

You do not have to submit a Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, to get the automatic withholding change. If you do not want to have your withholding reduced (because, for example, you have more than one job or you are married and your combined income places you in a higher tax bracket), you may want to file a new Form W-4. You may claim fewer withholding allowances on line 5 or request additional amounts to be withheld on line 6. For additional help, get IRS Publication 919, How Do I Adjust My Tax Withholding? Or visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov and use the “Withholding Calculator.”

Form W-4 is available on the Payroll website at http://www.uakron.edu/busfin/controller/docs/PR_09_W4_form.pdf. Please complete both the Federal and Ohio state sections. If you wish your new form to be effective with your April payroll, please write at the top of the form “EFFECTIVE, APRIL 2009”, otherwise, it will be effective with the next available payroll.

On Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22nd, businesses, schools, governments, and non-profits throughout Summit County will join together to turn off non-essential lights during the day and rely on natural light for at least one hour. It's a simple step toward making energy-saving choices every day.

Environmental Akron (www.enviroakron.org) is encouraging faculty to operate their classrooms on natural lighting, when and where possible. In addition, when a classroom, break room, or conference room is not in use, please switch off the lights. Students are encouraged to do the same in residence halls.

To make a pledge or get more energy-saving tips, visit www.lightsoutohio.org.
