Mortar Board Pioneer Award
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society was founded in 1918 as the first and only national society for college senior women. In honor of our historical roots, the society annually recognizes one or two outstanding women, either from The University of Akron or from the greater Akron community, who have made lasting and meaningful contributions to the betterment and advancement of women. The recipient(s) of the Pioneer Award will be personally notified and invited to attend the University’s All Campus Recognition Dinner on Tuesday evening, April 20, where the award will be officially presented.

Students, faculty and staff are invited to complete nominations for this prestigious award. Instead of completing a formal application, Mortar Board is asking that you write a nomination letter explaining why you believe the individual is deserving of the Pioneer Award. Please include either her resume or a summary of her exceptional accomplishments, particularly those that promote the advancement of women. All nomination letters must be received by the University Honors Program, Gallucci Hall, Room 155, on or before Friday, March 19.

Additional information about this and other leadership award opportunities may be found through the Student Development website.

Parking Lot Designations Update
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
With the reopening of the Schrank Deck (Lot 37) at the beginning of the Spring 2004 semester, all parking decks and surface lots have been reverted to their original designations ("FACULTY/STAFF ONLY," "STUDENT ONLY" or "ALL-PERMIT"), with the following exceptions: Lots 8 and 10 adjacent to the Natatorium and new Student Recreation Center and Field House will remain "ALL-PERMIT" lots until further notice.

The temporary designation signage (white with red letters) has been removed from the regular signs. The posted signs denoting that ALL lots and decks are “ALL-PERMIT AFTER 5:30 PM UNTIL 7:00 AM THE NEXT DAY” remain, as this is the policy.

Parking Services is currently completing an official count of all the parking spaces on campus, now that all parking decks and lots are back in full operation. As soon as the count has been completed, the revised number will be posted on the Parking Services website at http://www.uakron.edu/parking/.

New Version of Mydoom Worm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
A new version of the W32/Mydoom worm has hit. It propagates through generating SMTP email as an attachment within an email. It infects MicrosoftR WindowsR 9x/ME, NT4, 2000, 2003 and XP-based computers.

For a quick test to see if your computer is infected, go to http://www.microsoft.com/security/antivirus/mydoom.asp and select the “Check my PC” box.

The new version deletes Excel files from your computer and can travel to your shared drives and infect other computers on the network.

For security, you should not click on attachments unless you are expecting one and know what it is called.

You can download the necessary virus protection DAT file directly from the Internet. If you are currently using McAfee Virus protection (standard on UA PC’s), you can download a fix from http://www.networkassociates.com/us/downloads/updates/. Under the “Product” listing in the table, select “Weekly v4.x (DAT only). From the table that appears, chose the file “4327xdat.exe” (or the most current version) which is next to the “Platform” “Windows – Intel.” Open the file. It will install automatically on your computer.

If you have questions, please contact the Help Desk at (330) 972-6888.
