UA extends range by which students are charged flat tuition
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Your tuition may be lower next year if you are taking a full load. Last week, UA’s Board of Trustees voted to charge one price for 12-16 credit hours. Previously, UA charged one price for 12-15 credit hours.

In other words, students who take 16 credit hours today pay $4,191 for the first 15 credit hours and $301 for the 16th credit hour, for a total of $4,492. Next fall, they would pay $4,191 for the full 16 credit hours.

Those numbers may change slightly if the University adjusts tuition rates for the 2009-10 academic year. That decision, expected this summer at the latest, is dependent in part on the level of funding UA would receive from the state.

“We hope that this change makes it easier for students to complete their degree programs in a shorter period of time and at a lower overall cost,” said Dr. F. John Case, UA’s vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer.

Also last week, the Board eliminated a tier of its tuition structure. The change affects only students who were enrolled here before June 2002. Those students had been paying a grandfathered tuition rate, set up originally to enhance affordability. Many of those students have since graduated. Eliminating the tier will simplify UA’s tuition rate structure.

Vehicle assistance on campus now free
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
UA is making life on campus safer and more affordable by eliminating its $15 fee for vehicle assistance on campus.

UA students, faculty, staff and visitors now can call The University of Akron police dispatch line at 330-972-7123 and request vehicle assistance on campus at no charge.

“Our goal is always to provide a safe environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors,” says UA Police Chief Paul Callahan. “We didn’t want members of our campus community to decide not to ask for help because a fee was involved.”

Callahan also notes that the service, regardless of a cost being charged, is a necessary one on campus due to the number of calls his department regularly receives for vehicle assistance. In Fiscal Year 2007-08 alone, more than 1,300 calls were received — 361 for battery jumps and 945 for motorists being locked out of their vehicles. For the current fiscal year, the department has received 289 and 712 calls, respectively.

“We will fund the cost of this needed service through our normal budgeting process,” adds John Case, UA’s vice president for finance and administration.

Rightfully dubbed “The Greatest Spoken Word Duo. Ever," Death From Below has been tearing apart the Midwest spoken word scene since 2004. Their blue collar Chi-Town honesty complements the hard-edged humor and razor sharp observations that bring the house down every time they step on stage. Whether it's representing Chicago at the National Poetry Slam or rocking the set of HBO’s “Def Poetry Jam,” DFB always brings one of the highest energy spoken word performances ever. They've shared stages with legendary performers such as Smokey Robinson, Rev. Run, Savion Glover, KRS-One, Kanye West, Mos Def, Ani Difranco, and slam luminaries Marc Smith, Patricia Smith, Saul Williams, Anis Mojgani, Sonya Renee, and Mighty Mike McGee. They were voted "Favorite Poets" on their episode of Def Poetry Jam beating out recording artists Alicia Keys and John Legend.
