spacer image
On a warm summer day in July of 2002, July 16, 2002 to be exact, on Whisper Lake Dr. in St. Louis, MO 3 men set out with a commission from God to form an organization geared towards, the total growth of college aged men; whether it be academic, physical or spiritual. These 3 young men formed the "FOUNDING TRI-UNITY" of Alpha Omega Theta Christian Fraternity Incorporated

From a vision, hardwork and strong council the visionary founder and his two accompanying brothers in Christ agreed on something even greater than the ministry itself...THAT THE TIME HAD COME FOR MEN TO STAND UP ON THE WORD OF GOD AND BE THE LEADERS THEY WERE CALLED TO BE! These 3 young men were:

The "FOUNDING TRI-UNITY"

V.S.F.B. Darnell Ivy a.k.a. Visionary Founder a.o.k.a. "Tha Autha"

V.S.F.B. James "Fat Cat" Cousin a.o.k.a. "Overload"

V.S.F.B. Tony Glover a.o.k.a. "Absolute Order"

Over the past 5 years and through the UNBREAKABLE BOND we share with our sisters the BEAUTIFUL, DIGNIFIED and most Importantly CHRIST-LIKE women of ALPHA THETA OMEGA CHRISTIAN SORORITY INCORPORATED, we have touched lives, seen births, holy unions and hardships as families do. But through it all, from the beginning, until the end, one thing remains...GOD IS WITH US, AAA-OOO!!!

Engineers Without Borders is an international organization devoted to using sustainable engineering to solve development problems around the world... and the we just chartered a chapter at Akron!

Our group is planning a project for a village in Honduras with the goal of providing a sustainable source of clean water for its 3-4,000 residents. We will design, build, and implement the system, including spending some time in Honduras over the coming winter and spring breaks!

If you're interested in getting involved stop by our meeting on Monday May 13th at 6:30 in Student Union Room 316, or send us an email!

A project like this requires expertise in many diverse areas, including engineering, biology, chemistry, medicine, culture, travel, language, finance, fund raising, etc. So even if you're not an engineer, don't hesitate to get involved and lend your hand in making an enormous difference in the lives of these people in need!

Jared Mahone got home from college with a degree that he would never use, a sound in his head, and a bunch of songs he had written. He thought that maybe if he could use these songs to find this sound, he could actually get some sleep at night. For the fun of it, he decided to go out with some friends and play those songs at open mic nights around Columbus, Ohio. Soon after, Jared won band contests and found his way around the music scene in Columbus. Jared Mahone’s music has been seen as a soulful, groovy, funky pop.

spacer image
Come pray with us! Friday, April 17th at 7pm until Saturday, April 18th at 7pm members of the Akron chapter of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship will be at NOIZ on E. Bowery Street in Akron praying. God is moving on campuses in our nation and around the world by a movement of 24/7 prayer. We would like to join this movement. We are organizing a 24 hour prayer room and inviting many people to join us as we creatively express our praise, thanksgiving, repentance, and longings to God. As opposed to sitting in circles and praying as usually seen at prayer meetings, we will have interactive stations set up to usher people into the presence of God. The room will be a place of free expression, and will include areas to create art, dance, listen to and create music, and engage with social and local issues as we present our hearts to our Creator.

Mental Health Care Conference – April 23-24, 2009 April 23 - April 24

spacer image
The Archives of the History of American Psychology is hosting a conference titled "Mental Health Care in America: Past, Present and Future." The event will take place on Thursday, April 23 and Friday, April 24, 2009 at The University of Akron, Quaker Square Inn. We have assembled an outstanding group of scholars and leaders in mental health policy, practice, advocacy, and history. This conference is made possible with the generous support of the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation.

Special low registration fees for University faculty, staff and students. To see the conference schedule and obtain registration information go to: http://www3.uakron.edu/ahap/news/mhc_conference_2009.phtml or contact Dorothy Gruich at 330-972-7285 or gruich@uakron.edu.

Conference Overview:
The past century has witnessed substantial changes in mental health care in America. In 1909 Clifford Beers founded the National Committee for Mental Hygiene and Sigmund Freud made his only trip to America, fostering the spread of psychoanalysis. Forty years later, in 1949, the National Institute of Mental Health was established. In the span of 100 years mental health in America has unfolded against a backdrop of social, political, and economic changes. This two-day conference brings together leading experts in the field to examine where we have been, where we are, and to speculate on where we are going.

Please encourage students to register and plan on attending the 2nd Annual Graduate Student Government Colloquium on Wednesday, April 29 from 9 to 1 in the Student Union Ballrooms.

The theme of this year's conference is "The Importance of Graduate Education for the 21st Century." We will have three panels. We will begin with a discussion of the process of becoming a professor and maintaining an academic life. Following this panel, Debb Thorne, an associate professor of sociology at Ohio University, will speak on financial literacy and today's graduate student. She will discuss managing college loans and making wise financial decisions in the current economy. And our lunchtime keynote speaker will be Bahman Taheri, CEO of AlphaMicron and adujunct professor of chemistry at the Kent State Liquid Crystal Institute. He will talk about entrepreneurship and the nexus between academics and industry. All three panels are extremely relevant to the current graduate student and will allow time for group discussion of issues important to students in attendance.

The first 80 graduate students to register will receive a complementary lunch during the keynote address. Further, the Center for Career Management will be on hand to review resumes and CVs between 1 and 2:30. Each resume/CV review will last for 15 minutes and students should indicate their desire to participate when registering. There are only 18 resume/CV slots available on the day of the colloquium and are sure to fill quickly.

To register, please email akrongsg@gmail.com with your name and department and whether you'd like to have a resume/CV appointment scheduled. Further, if you are unable to attend lunch, please let us know. Register quickly as only the first 80 registered students will be able to enjoy the complementary luncheon.

The Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and New Business Legal Clinic are looking for five undergraduate students (Juniors or Seniors to be next year) from any major to participate in an intensive week long entrepreneurship academy over the summer from August 9-14, 2009. The students will learn about various aspects of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship by attending two sessions. The students will live with 30 other students from six universities on the campus of Kent State University.

According to Dr. Todd Finkle and Ms. Denise Easterling from the Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, “This is a significant step forward for the region. This is a university-wide initiative that integrates students not only from all over our university, but with other schools to create synergies. As a group, we realized that we can accomplish much more together than individually. Our goal is to develop entrepreneurs, who will remain in the region after graduation. The economic future of our region will be shaped by students like these. The selected students will return to their home institutions, ready to start the academic year with new knowledge, new skills, and new attitudes about entrepreneurial opportunities here in Northeast Ohio . It won’t be all hard work. We will have a variety of activities lined up for the students in the evening such as going to an Indians game. There will be ample opportunities to network and meet a variety of prominent entrepreneurs and business people from the community. It will be an experience of a lifetime.”

To be eligible, students must be entering their junior or senior year in any major. Tuition, room, board, text books will be provided at no cost. Students can go to www.eecnehio.com to learn how to apply.

For more information please contact Dr. Todd A. Finkle at finklet@uakron.edu or Denise Easterling at stockbeaner@yahoo.com.
