Bliss Institute Scholarship
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Dear Political Science or Certificate Student:

I would like to invite you to apply for a Ray C. and Ellen P. Bliss Political Science Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.

In 2008-2009, six scholarships of $2,000 were awarded to Political Science majors and students pursuing the Certificate in Applied Politics. For the typical recipient, this award covered a considerable portion of their tuition.

Students must be undergraduate political science majors or undergraduates enrolled in the Bliss Institute Certificate of Applied Politics. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their grade point average (overall and political science), participants in political activities, and commitment to the political process. Preferences will be given to the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and residents from Summit and Stark counties. Because the criteria are flexible, students from a wide variety of backgrounds compete successfully for the Bliss Scholarship.

If you are interested in applying for this Scholarship, please complete the enclosed application form and return it to Jenni Fitzgerald at the Bliss Institute, Olin 223, by April 24, 2009. Awards will be announced in May.

I would be delighted to answer any questions you might have at (330) 972-5182.

Sincerely,

John C. Green
Director

Collecting Comedy DVDs for Cancer Patients at Akron City Hospital April 20 - April 24
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Close your eyes for a quick moment and remember the last time you that were so sick you didn't - and couldn't - get out of bed for the day. You
probably sipped on juice and chicken soup while watching movies during your recovery. Staying in bed or sedentary in a chair is a typical
scenario for cancer patients, however they often don't have a quick
recovery time and many of their days are spent receiving chemotherapy,
blood transfusions, and other medications in the hospital. For this
reason, the Ritchie Hall Government has initiated a special project
called the "Humor Library" to collect humorous DVDs to give to the
Cooper Cancer Center at Akron City Hospital. Patients that are receiving
chemotherapy (on an out-patient and in-patient basis) will be able to
borrow these movies to watch while they are receiving treatment. We are
calling upon the students of The University of Akron to help with this important effort.

Alpha Sigma Phi has volunteered to help spearhead this program with the Ritchie Hall Government. We are asking that each student consider gathering humorous DVDs, TV shows on DVD, and monetary donations to directly benefit these patients. All monetary donations will be used to purchase portable DVD players and DVDs for patient use. The Cooper Cancer Center will receive 100% of all donations and materials can be dropped off in Room 108 of Ritchie Hall (Bonnie Bromley's office) between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Collections will be conducted during lunch hours in the Student Union from Monday to Friday. All materials are due by April 24th and there is no donation too small (or large!).

As school is coming to a close, this is the perfect time to knock on
doors and ask your friends to consider donating one or two old movies
from their collection to this cause. While most of our personal movies
go unwatched day-by-day, patients and families will be utilizing these
materials on a daily basis.

If you have any questions or would like your donation acknowledged,
please contact either Kendal First with the Ritchie Hall Government at
Smile244@aol.com or Scott Abrams with Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity at sda18@uakron.edu.

As always, thank you for your help as we look forward to donating a
large library for the patients at Akron City Hospital. After all,
laughter is the best medicine.

Come join the next Philosophy Club meeting where we will be discussing the Philosophy of Science.

What is science? How do we set the limits of what should be considered a science? How is science different from pseudo-science? This presentation will be an introduction to two popular views: Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn. Each will be considering astrology and astronomy and why one is a science and the other is not.

Philosophy Club will be meeting at 5:00 PM in the Student Union room 316 on Tuesday, April 21st. We hope to see you there!

Once rivals on the Arizona music scene, Ryan Green and Cameron Hood joined forces and traveled to Boston in 2003 with big dreams. In three years, the acoustic guitar duo graduated from performing in subway stations to touring theaters with platinum-selling artist Jason Mraz. They also went from selling self-made CDs to recording a record with Grammy-winning producer Ross Hogarth. In 2004, Ryanhood was chosen to perform in Boston’s world famous Street Performers Festival at Faneuil Hall. Soon after, they landed on the “Top-20 Hot List” by Campus Activities Magazine, which called them one of the hottest new bands on the college market. From humble and hot Tucson beginnings, Ryanhood has an uncanny ability to connect with their audience and leave them smiling.

The Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and New Business Legal Clinic are looking for five undergraduate students (Juniors or Seniors to be next year) from any major to participate in an intensive week long entrepreneurship academy over the summer from August 9-14, 2009. The students will learn about various aspects of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship by attending two sessions. The students will live with 30 other students from six universities on the campus of Kent State University.

According to Dr. Todd Finkle and Ms. Denise Easterling from the Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, "This is a significant step forward for the region. This is a university-wide initiative that integrates students not only from all over our university, but with other schools to create synergies. As a group, we realized that we can accomplish much more together than individually. Our goal is to develop entrepreneurs, who will remain in the region after graduation. The economic future of our region will be shaped by students like these. The selected students will return to their home institutions, ready to start the academic year with new knowledge, new skills, and new attitudes about entrepreneurial opportunities here in Northeast Ohio . It won't be all hard work. We will have a variety of activities lined up for the students in the evening such as going to an Indians game. There will be ample opportunities to network and meet a variety of prominent entrepreneurs and business people from the community. It will be an experience of a lifetime."

To be eligible, students must be entering their junior or senior year in any major. Tuition, room, board, text books will be provided at no cost. Students can go to www.eecnehio.com to learn how to apply.

The Deadline for applying is May 15, 2009. For more information please contact Dr. Todd A. Finkle at finklet@uakron.edu or Denise Easterling at stockbeaner@yahoo.com.
