New Computer Virus Warning—W32/BAGLE.J@MM VE-MAIL
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
A new mass-mailing, email worm is circulating. The message is constructed to make it appear to be a legitimate warning notification. The subject line and text of the email is about your email account, saying it is disabled, infected or something similar. The worm then uses your address book to send messages to others. The worm message may have an attached file (.EXE, .PIF or .ZIP) that may be password protected. The password is included in the text of the message. By using password protection, the worm may be able to bypass some firewalls.

For security reasons, you should never open an attachment unless you are certain of its source.

Because of this new worm, all Zip files are temporarily being stopped by the University's firewall.

A new DAT file to combat this worm was pushed to campus on March 2. If need be, you can download the file directly from the Internet. If you are currently using McAfee (standard on UA PCs), you can download the file from http://www.networkassociates.com/us/downloads/updates/. Under the “Product” listing in the table, select “Weekly v4.x (DAT only). From the table that appears, choose the file “4332xdat.exe” (or the most current version) that is next to the “Platform” “Windows – Intel.” Open the file. It will install automatically on your computer.

If you have questions, please contact the Help Desk at (330) 972-6888.
