New, enhanced student email system: UAnetID@zips.uakron.edu Aug. 28 - Sept. 30
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Beginning this Fall, The University of Akron will use Google’s Gmail for our student email system. Gmail provides a variety of features and benefits that will dramatically improve our email service.

Your new email address format will be UAnetID@zips.uakron.edu. For example, zippy@uakron.edu will become zippy@zips.uakron.edu. Faculty and staff will continue to use the current email system.

Now until Sept. 30, you can opt-in early to move your email account to the new system. To do this, log into ZipLine and select the “Opt-In to New Email System” link in the Gmail box or go to the opt-in page at https://auth.uakron.edu/zid/app/email/opt-in/.

Your current mail and address book will be automatically transferred to the new email account. To log into your new email account, go to http://mail.zips.uakron.edu/.

On Sept. 30, the University will convert all remaining student email accounts to the new system. At that time, the University will automatically transfer current mail and your address book to the new email account. Until Nov. 2, mail sent to the old UA email address will automatically be forwarded to the new address. Gmail also provides the ability to forward mail to another address.

The new student email system has a variety of features and benefits, including:
• “Email for life”: Students will retain their email accounts as they become alumni
• No ads for active students
• A secure, innovative web-based email system with a huge storage capacity (currently 7 GB and growing), hosted on highly available hardware
• Support for mobile devices as well as POP and IMAP clients
• An excellent search function
• Very effective spam and virus filtering
• The ability to easily manage contacts and group mailing lists
• Google Calendar: a shareable calendar for meetings and events
• Google Talk: an instant messaging program that includes voice chat functions
• Google Docs: a web-based document repository with collaborative editing capabilities for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation documents

For more information about Google Mail and Apps at UA, go to http://blogs.uakron.edu/googleapps/ or for FAQs, go to http://blogs.uakron.edu/googleapps/google-apps-at-akron-frequently-asked-questions/

The Zip Support Center will remain the primary contact for assistance with your email account when answers can’t be found on the Gmail help pages.

If you have questions about the new system or the conversion process, contact the Zip Support Center at support@uakron.edu, 330-972-6888.

Student Presentions With Laptops In TEC Classrooms
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
More and more students are being encouraged or even required to make class presentations with their laptops using the A/V Systems in many classrooms. Audio Visual Services would like to offer some very important tips that may prevent some embarrassing or frustrating problems that can and do happen.

Laptops are as varied as people are so these tips are designed to be rather universal. Just remember that Audio Visual Services (330-972-7811) is here to support students as well as faculty and staff so if the tips do not work, call.

#1 - Prepare! If at all possible go into an unused classroom with an A/V System BEFORE your presentation and try it out.

#2 - Do NOT connect your laptop to the A/V System with it already booted up. Most times the laptop will not turn on its VGA output even when using the function keys. It must be booted after it is connected. Turning off the A/V System and turning it back on does not help – it’s the laptop that needs re-booted.

#3 - MAC users most likely will need an inexpensive VGA adaptor.

#4 - Do NOT use the cheap, thin cream-colored VGA cables. Experience has proven that they WILL greatly degrade your image, they will break wires and pins very easily and they may not even work at all. These cables cannot work well with our high-end projector and laptop resolutions.

#5 - Treat the cables and connectors gently. Be careful when connecting and disconnecting them and when moving equipment with them connected. Don’t drop the connectors on a hard surface.

#6 - Remember that the VGA and audio cables are NOT provided. It is the responsibility of the A/V System user to have their own cables. Cables may be purchased at Computer Solutions in the Student Union and many local and on-line sources. But remember the old adage that you get what you pay for. The laptop audio cable is called a “Mini Stereo to Two RCA Male” cable and it would plug into the laptop headphone jack and the RCA jacks on the A/V System input panel just below the VGA connector.

#7 - If you require the network for your presentation do not rely on the wireless system for speed. A wired connection is on the A/V Input Panel and you will need the RJ-45 network cable.

One final note - these systems are NOT for use other than classes and are monitored! Do not abuse the privilege!

Remember, plan ahead, call if you have problems and by all means, have a GREAT semester!

"AMAZING RACE” STYLE BICYCLE SCAVENGER HUNT, FREE INDIE ROCK CONCERT AND ZANY TRICYCLE RACES HIGHLIGHT ACTION-PACKED AKRON BIKE WEEK EVENTS IN UNIVERSITY PARK

University Park Alliance (UPA), The University of Akron Bike Club and the City of Akron are sponsoring two electrifying events in University Park on Sunday Sept. 6 for residents, students and visitors with a keen sense of fun.

Crank UP! Bicycle Scavenger Hunt

Part road race, part scavenger hunt of heroic proportion, cyclists will take to the streets of University Park for a rousing good time in the second annual “Amazing Race” style Crank UP! Bicycle Scavenger Hunt. Two groups of cyclists will race for a chance to win bragging rights as well as exceptional prizes. A long race will be offered for more adventurous cyclists, while those who like a more leisurely ride can choose a shorter race. Both races start at 4 p.m. at the University Park Cycle Shop, 160 Exchange St. in Akron and will conclude at University Park's Grace Park for the Crank UP! After Party.

Race tickets can be purchased for $5 in advance or $7 the day of the race at University Park Cycle Shop. Bikes are available for rental through the University Park Bicycle Shop. Helmets are required to race. Participants must be 18 or older and provide a drivers license to ride.

Crank UP! After Party Featuring a Free Concert by “Other Girls”

Organized by The University of Akron Cycle Club, the FREE Crank UP! After Party will feature the tight power pop of Audio Eagle Records artists “Other Girls,” food and exhibitors in a party-in-the-park celebration of cycling and other aspects of sustainable living. Starting at 6 p.m. and taking place at Grace Park (at the corner of North Prospect and Perkins), visitors can check out the displays, listen to the band, eat great local food, or just cool their heels. University of Akron Non-racers from campus and across the city are encouraged to ride down to the Crank UP! After Party to welcome the racers and to enjoy the festivities.

Student and Greek Organization Tricycle Races
UA Student or Greek organizations looking for a bit more competition at the Crank UP! After Party can have the chance to test their athleticism, knowledge of the University Park neighborhood and especially their ability to withstand public humiliation as they participate in wild and crazy tricycle relay races on full-size tricycles to raise money for University Park neighborhood nonprofit organizations. If your organization is interested in participating call 330-972-8859 or email info@upakron.com by Wednesday, September 2nd.

Theatre Guild at The University of Akron presents...

"Sez She" by Jane Martin

directed by Tiffany Johnson

"Written to be performed by five actresses, this sequel to Jane Martin's last monologue play picks up where VITAL SIGNS left off - in these funnier, stranger days of the 21st century. Reveling in virtues of brevity that include hilarity, surprise and homespun philosophy, these monologues roam the range of contemporary perspective on everything from sexual harassment to sleeping in theaters to the erotic appeals of silence. Whether biking across Massachusetts with 23,000 lawyers or reflecting on the meaning of a Pekinese dog with a picket fence stake through its heart, these characters know how to take the stage and make the most of their five minutes of fame."~Samuel French

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.

Questions about specific announcements should be made to the contact person/department/organization listed in the announcement.Your event will automatically be forwarded to the University's online calendar. The Zipmail Coordinator can be reached at x2837.
