This Fall, the Student Union is implementing a new program for commuter students. The program is intended to support and enhance the educational experience of first year students who live off campus.

To lead this program, we need commuter assistants. The commuter assistant is a leadership position where the student leader is assigned first-year commuter students to advise and mentor. The commuter assistants are responsible for a group of commuter students that will range in size from eight to twelve students.

We are currently looking for students to fill five commuter assistant positions. The position is compensated ($300 stipend and other benefits) and students will receive training that will start this Spring.

Applications are available at the Information Center located on the second floor of the Student Union. The deadline to apply for a commuter assistant position is Monday, April 19. For additional information, call Brandi Hephner LaBanc or Mike Kulick at (330) 972-2762.

Members of the Campus Community:

Earlier this semester, Dr. Thomas Angelo, associate provost for teaching, learning and faculty development; founding director of the Institute for Teaching and Learning; and professor, announced his resignation effective May 9, 2004. As provost, I wish him great success in his future endeavors and thank him for his service to The University of Akron.

Since that announcement, I have conferred with members of the ITL Advisory Board, the Council of Deans, and vice presidents and others about an effective transition for ITL leadership and continuing support for the initiatives of the Institute for Teaching and Learning. I thank them for their advice and their continued support for the scholarship of teaching and learning.

I am pleased to announce the appointment, effective May 10, 2004, of interim co-directors of the Institute for Teaching and Learning: Dr. Paulette Popovich, associate dean for instruction at Wayne College, and Dr. David McConnell, professor of geology. For the next year, they will share those duties and provide the leadership that helps us as a community chart a strong future for ITL and the topics of teaching, learning and faculty development.

Soon, they will meet with the ITL Advisory Board and others to develop and announce ITL plans for the coming months.

Please join me in extending appreciation to Dr. Angelo and welcoming Dr. McConnell and Dr. Popovich to their new roles.

Image is an essential component to the interview process, and professional dress and etiquette are necessary pieces of the overall "package" you present to prospective employers. The Office of Student Development, the Office of Multicultural Development and the Center for Career Management are joining forces to help educate students on how to:

**Build a professional (and versatile!) wardrobe on a budget.
**Modify your behavior to "match" your professional image and "fit" into any professional encounter.
**Express your individuality and ethnic/cultural diversity while maintaining a professional image.

Fashion tips will be facilitated by Trinka Taylor, a consultant specializing in etiquette, with additional contributions made by Kaufmann’s, Men’s Wearhouse and Okoh African Imports & Designs. Audience members are strongly encouraged to attend the event in professional dress for the option of being critiqued!

ASTD Workshop/Dinner April 15
5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Student Chapter of the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) is having a workshop/dinner in partnership with the Northeast Ohio ASTD Monday, April 15, at the Sheraton Suites. The topic will be "Violence in the Workplace" presented by Tim Dimoff. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with networking, followed by dinner at 6:15 p.m. and a program/speakers from 7:15-8:15 p.m.

Timothy Dimoff is a 1977 graduate of Denison University with a BA in Sociology. He is president of SACS Consulting. Mr. Dimoff has developed several nationally copyrighted training programs in subjects including drug and abuse issues, workplace issues and employee confrontation, employee motivation, sexual harassment and smart hiring. Mr. Dimoff was awarded the prestigious "Entrepreneur of the Year" award by the Akron Regional Development Board Small Business Council.

The workshop will focus on liability issues from hiring to firing--with rapidly growing government regulations and employees more concerned about their job rights (and ready to fight for them in the courts) expensive legal consequences are possible at every step. Employers need to protect themselves whether they're hiring, firing, disciplining, promoting, drug testing, etc. Additionally, we now have to deal with various forms of terror and the constant issues of "Life Rage" on a daily basis, which is the topic of Tim's new national book that he will touch on during the presentation.

Costs are as follows:
Student members of the American Society for Training & Development at The University of Akron $10

Special offer available: Interested students can become members of ASTD for $10 and then pay $10 for the workshop/dinner that night. Those who join the student chapter of ASTD are eligible for a special membership price to NEO ASTD of $13 (rather than the normal $45).

NEO ASTD members $20

Non members of ASTD or NEO ASTD $25

Please RSVP to (330) 972-7936 or cmc49@aol.com with number attending, member status, correct spelling of name and where you heard about the workshop.
