Flu update for UA's Student Health Services
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
UA's Student Health Services reports that while the number of flu cases on campus is slightly elevated for this time of year, individual cases have been mild or moderate in nature, typically lasting three to five days — no different from the common, seasonal flu.

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Dr. Margo Erme, an epidemiologist at the Akron Health Department, recommend that testing for the H1N1 strain (or swine flu) should be conducted in only two instances:

  • when someone is hospitalized with severe flu symptoms, or
  • when a cluster of people is reporting flu symptoms.

No one from UA has been hospitalized because of the flu, and none of the on-campus cases has occurred within a cluster (for instance, within a wing of a residence hall).

UA has a surveillance system in place to quickly identify a cluster, should such an outbreak occur. Further, UA has asked students, faculty and staff to call UA Student Health Services at 330-972-7808 if they have flu symptoms. This has been part of a campaign on campus to educate about the flu and how to limit its spread.

If a cluster of flu-like illnesses occurs on campus or a patient with flu-like illness is hospitalized, the Akron Health Department would be informed immediately and the department would determine the need for testing.

Recommendations to keep in mind:

  • If you have influenza-like symptoms, first pick up the phone and call your health care provider or UA Student Health Services (330-972-7808, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays) to report the illness.
  • Then, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever has passed (without the aid of fever-reducing medicine). Notify by phone or e-mail your professors and keep up with assignments.
  • See our flu information page for more.

Reminder about state smoking ban
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
To comply with Ohio's smoking ban, UA now forbids smoking in any enclosed area, including buildings, parking decks and University vehicles. In order to ensure, as now required by law, that tobacco smoke does not enter any area in which smoking is prohibited, no smoking is permitted within 25 feet of an entranceway, window or ventilation system of any University building or enclosed area.

The new law requires that the University remove cigarette receptacles from areas on campus where smoking is prohibited. That means that smokers will have to fully extinguish their cigarettes when done and then place them in receptacles that will be located at least 25 feet from the entranceway of University buildings. The law allows the University to adopt a policy prohibiting smoking anywhere on campus in the future.

The University is asking all smokers to be mindful of the restrictions in and around buildings, and to be cautious and courteous when discarding cigarettes. More information is available on the Ohio Department of Health's Web site.

A few important notes:
- Our first meeting is Monday Oct. 5th at 7:30 in the student center, pizza and pop, short movie clip, loads of fun, be there.

- If you are planning on going on the Out West trip in January you need to fill out the forms (on the website) and submit your deposit ASAP. We currently do not have enough people signed up so we're having to cut rooms - let us know as soon as possible if you are planning on going.

- The cost of the trip is a little over $600, and the airfare is a little over $300. This is a TON cheaper than if you were to book by yourself so take advantage of it!

-You don't have to be a student to go, so if you know someone that's interested let them know about the trip (all the info is on our website)
www.uakron.edu/ski

-We'll be in the student union in front of the Market (where all the tables are lined up that everyone ignores and walks by). So make sure you stop and ask any questions you may have.

Time is of the essence.
Godspeed.

ASG Bottle cap collection RETURNS! Sept. 18 - May 7
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Associated Student Government will be collecting plastic
bottle caps again this year! These are regular plastic caps found on
bottles like pop, water, and Gatorade.

To make the collection more fun this year, it will be a competition!
Each student organization, campus department, and residence hall floor
that wants to participate must have one person be the point person and
register their group with ASG by going to our website at www.uakron.edu/groups/asg/caps.php
. Registration is open starting now and will close Friday, October
2nd at 5 PM.

Caps will be collected for the first time on Monday, September 28
through Friday, October 2nd, and periodically throughout the semester
on dates to be announced in later messages and on our website.

Three winners will be announced throughout the year - the group that
collects the most for Fall 2009, the group that collects the most for
Spring 2010, and the group that collects the most over the entire
year. Prizes are still being determined.

To calculate the number of caps, ASG will weigh randomly selected caps
until they total 1lb. We will then estimate the total number of caps
based on weight, and record the number of caps.
