Health care: Political philosophy Sept. 29
5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
How should we, as a society, arrange our collective lives?
How shall our economic and social institutions be arranged?

Political philosophy seeks to find answers to these questions. Health care is an important current topic in political philosophy. Democrats seek the goal of universal health insurance coverage through a number of possible mechanisms, such as the public option, the single payer system, or using health insurance cooperatives. Republicans counter that the emphasis should be placed on things like tort reform, allowing people to purchase insurance across state lines, and giving tax credits to be used for the purchase of individual insurance.

Philosophy Club President Nevin Johnson will speak on this current issue and offer a solution that has yet to be nationally discussed to stop the ballooning crisis in health care.

Also, there will be a significant number of free philosophy books that will be given away at the meeting to sufficiently curious minds.

Contact UoAPhilosophyClub@gmail.com or go to http://www3.uakron.edu/philosophy/Site/Philosophy_Club.html for more information.

Traditional Chinese Moon Festival Sept. 30
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Moon Festival, or the Mid-Autumn Festival, is a popular Chinese festival to celebrate abundance and togetherness. It is on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar, which falls on October 3rd this year. The Confucius Institute is to hold a series of events to celebrate the Moon Festival on the campus of The University of Akron. From 12 PM to 1 PM on September 30th, there will be a lecture about this traditional Chinese festival in Room 316, Student Union. Different varieties of moon cakes will be free to taste for attendees. You are welcome to join the Mid-Autumn Party with Chinese teachers and students from 5 PM to 7 PM in the Game Room 114, Student Union.

The Moon Festival falls on the autumn equinox when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest. During this period of time, the days are especially bright, and the sky clear. Chinese people are to seize this opportunity to appreciate the moon’s beauty. The full moon reminds people of their families, so the Moon Festival is an occasion for family reunion. Chinese families like to get together to eat the moon cakes and watch the moon at the Moon Festival night. According to a famous Chinese poem, when people are far from loved ones at this time, it is common for them to raise their heads to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, no matter how far away, on the night of the Moon Festival.

Jenn Grinels has the ability to turn every listener into a die hard fan. Jenn’s music is jazzy in its pacing, soulful in its delivery, and heartfelt in its sensuous tone. She has been noted a cross between Martin Sexton and Fiona Apple, Sexton because of her vocal focus & control, and Apple because of her tell-off confessional/conversational lyrics and penchant for complex rhyme schemes.

A free performance open to the public by Val Gray Ward of My Soul is a Witness. She will present excerpts from her acclaimed one-woman shows on Wednesday. September 30 at 8 p.m. in Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall.

Val Gray Ward is an actress, producer, cultural activist and internationally known theater personality. She has been a long-time activist in the Black Arts Movement in Chicago, and recognized for her commitment to the revitalization of the black community through the arts.

Ward founded the nonprofit theatre Kuumba in 1968, and with Kuumba, she has produced and directed such plays as The Amen Corner by James Baldwin, Welcome To Black River by Samm Art Williams, and Five On The Black Hand Side by Charles Fuller. Touring has also been important. Ward took the cast and crew of Useni Eugene Perkins' play, The Image Makers to Lagos, Nigeria, as part of the FESTAC '77, an international African arts festival. Ward brought Kuumba's musical production, The Little Dreamer: The Life of Bessie Smith to Japan in 1981 and produced Buddy Butler's In The House of The Blues in Montreal. Ward and the company received Emmy Awards for the PBS television production of Precious Memories: Strolling 47th Street in 1988.

When not producing, Ward performs one-woman shows in the United States and abroad. Performances include Harriet Tubman by Francis Ward, Sister Sonji by Sonia Sanchez and I Am A Black Woman, which includes the poetry of Mari Evans.

Val Gray Ward’s performance at The University of Akron is presented in conjunction with an exhibition of the work of artists Jon Onye Lockard and Woodrow Nash, each beloved and celebrated for original contributions to diversity in America. The exhibition is in the Honors Gallery, located in the Honors College first and lower level hallways, through October 15, 2009.

The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Tau Chapter will be rocking NON-STOP outside the Student Union near the Starbucks exit, to raise money for The Reginald V. White Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Brothers will be rocking from 12 pm Monday Oct. 5th until 12 pm Friday Oct. 9th and will finish rocking during the Homecoming football game inside the NEW INFOCISION STADIUM versus Ohio University on Saturday Oct. 10th near GATE 4!

This memorial scholarship fund was established in 1978 by the brothers of Alpha Tau Chapter as a loving tribute to the memory of Brother Reginald V. White whose life was tragically lost during a cave exploration in West Virginia. Two highly motivated incoming freshmen are to be selected annually by the University Scholarship Committee as Reginald V. White Scholars without restriction as to race, color, creed, sex or national origin.

Academic achievement, financial need, personality and commitment to the individual improvement are to be considered in the selection of the recipient.

Please come out and show your support for this great cause. This would also be an opportunity to meet the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. here at The University of Akron and to learn more about us.
