Police: Hints to help prevent theft
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
badgeLike any community, UA receives reports of theft from time to time. UA’s police department, which operates 24-7 to protect campus and nearby student neighborhoods, offers these tips to help prevent theft:

  • Don’t leave books and valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. This includes that GPS unit attached to your windshield.
  • Lock vehicle doors and roll up windows. Many thefts are crimes of opportunity, and most could be easily prevented.
  • If your car is one valued by car thieves, consider installing an anti-theft device, an alarm or a vehicle-recovery system. Police across the region report that Hondas made between 1992 and 2000 are being targeted right now.
  • If you notice someone walking in a UA parking deck or lot, looking into car windows, let UA’s police department know. Call the department at 330-972-2911 at any hour.
  • Likewise, report to UAPD any car alarms that you hear going off.

By following these tips and by notifying our police any time you notice something unusual, you’ll be helping yourself and others.

UA eliminates student parking fee for football games
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Associated Student Government is pleased to announce that students with a valid parking permit will now be able to park for free at UA football games.

The change follows a vote by ASG representatives to eliminate the $5 fee. Following the vote, ASG President Jason Ziegler then met with members of the UA administration to discuss the students’ concern.

“They heard us,” Ziegler said. “We took students’ concerns forward, and after the administration researched the matter, they came back to us and agreed to make the change.”

With two home games completed, UA’s Parking Services re-evaluated its staffing needs for future home-game parking, and determined that with adjustments to the plan, the student fee could be waived, with two exceptions: The two main tailgating lots on Wolf Ledges (south of the School of Law) will continue to carry a $5 charge. The charge will offset the additional costs the University incurs to clean the lots afterward.

The next home game will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field. The opponent is Ohio, and it will be the first Homecoming game held on campus.

If you have any questions or concerns about game day parking, send an e-mail to Parking Services at parking@uakron.edu.

Feeling ill? Is it the flu or a cold?
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
UA has created this Web page with information about the flu, including a table to help you determine whether you have the flu or a cold.

If you have influenza-like symptoms, first pick up the phone and call your health care provider or UA Student Health Services (330-972-7808, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays) to report the illness. If you will miss class, notify your professors beforehand, and be prepared to make up any missed work.

If you are sick with flu-like illness, the CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, except to get medical care or other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) Stay away from others as much as possible to keep from making others sick.

Ill students who live on campus are strongly encouraged to go home if possible, seek the help of their health care provider if needed, and return to classes when free of fever as indicated above. If you cannot go home, notify Student Health Services at 330-972-7808.

ETIQUETTE LUNCH Oct. 9

spacer image

Many professional interviews and interactions take place during a meal. Do you have the etiquette skills you need to show you are ready to work in a professional environment? There is no better, or possibly worse, place to make an impression than the dinner table. Most of us can get through a meal with a friend without even thinking twice about it, but once you’re sitting with a potential employer, the pressure is on.

The Center for Career Management is offering a “crash course” highlighting the basic etiquette of a full-course meal. Our program this year is being sponsored by the Suarez Corporation and dining tips will be facilitated by a consultant specializing in etiquette and interviewing, as you enjoy a lunch of soup, salad, your choice of entrée, and dessert. Reservations for this event must be made by Monday, October 5, 2009 by 5:00pm through the Center for Career Management, Simmons 301. Seating is limited.

Pre-registration and a deposit of $25.00 (cash, credit card, Zipcard, or check) (refunded if you attend) are required. Seating is limited and you must register for this program in advance. Contact the Center for Career Management at 330.972.7747. All students and alumni actively seeking internships/co-ops and full- time jobs may attend.

Date of Program: F, October 9, 2009
Time: 12:00pm-1:30pm
Location: Martin University Center

Note: seating is open to new attendees only

A Message from ASG President, Jason Ziegler on student organization funding

REGARDING: Undergraduate Activity Funding Updates

Over the past several months ASG and the Department of Student Life have worked hard to revamp and improve how student organizations apply for funding. Revisions include a new application process, new forms, and a new name. The current funding process will now be known as the Undergraduate Activity Fund process (UAF) (former name, EAF (Extracurricular Activity Fund process). Also, student organizations will now apply for funding requests each semester that funds are needed.

ASG will provide information and training workshops for student groups on how to obtain funds through the UAF fapplication process. To ensure that student organization representatives understand UAF and have adequate time to request funding we have developed the following timeline for Spring 2010 semester funding requests for Student Organizations:

Organizations can RSVP for a workshop of their choice by emailing ASG at asg@uakron.edu. Include in the email your contact information including, name, position, organization, email and telephone number.
