UA to test Z-Alert emergency text-messaging service on Wednesday

The University will send a test text message to those who subscribe to its Z-Alert emergency-messaging service at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Why? UA tests the service periodically. The Sept. 9 test will fall in the middle of Student Appreciation Day, a time of peak cell-phone activity on campus. Running the test at this hour will tell UA how well the service works when the network is busy. You can help by being on your phone (calling or texting) at exactly 4 p.m.

What should you do when you receive the test text message? Nothing. The message will clearly state that it is a test.

What is the Z-Alert emergency text-messaging system? See this page.

Did you know? Z-Alert is on Twitter, too. (We recommend that you sign up for the Z-Alert text messaging service and follow Z-Alert on Twitter too.)

Not feeling good, but you’re not sure if it’s a cold or the flu? The University has created a Web site to help with such questions.

So far, there have been no confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu virus on campus, and most of the cases nationwide have been mild.

If you are experiencing flu symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and our health professionals recommend that you stay home for at least 24 hours until after your fever is gone, except to get medical care or other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) Notify your professors by phone or e-mail of your illness as soon as possible, and be prepared to make up any work that is missed. And let UA’s Student Health Services know of your illness, so that we can track its progress, if any, on campus. The number is 330-972-7808. Learn more.
