If you are a musician who must hear the music accurately, but you need to reduce the volume to save your hearing... or you are a music enthusiast who enjoys concerts and clubs where the music is too LOUD to be safe, but you still want to precisely hear the music you love... custom made musicians earplugs or Hi-Fidelity earplugs will save your hearing and still allow you to enjoy music to the fullest!

Ordinary earplugs reduce high frequency sounds too much, which means you hear mostly the mid and low frequencies. This often distorts speech and makes music sound terrible! Custom made musicians earplugs and over the counter Hi-Fidelity earplugs provide the necessary reduction in sound to avoid damage while maintaining the quality of the music!

Don’t wait another day to protect your hearing. The Audiology and Speech Center offers these special products at significantly reduced pricing for faculty, staff, and students. The clinic is open weekdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Contact the Audiology and Speech Center, located in the Polsky Building, at 330-972-7883 to schedule your appointment to learn more about protecting your hearing.

The ten-piece Jack Schantz Jazz unit presents “The Way of the Sly Man” - a 90-minute work that explores the ideas of 20th century philosopher and teacher G.I. Gurdjieff. The piece draws upon a variety of musical influences, including American jazz and pop. Influences include the music of Thomas de Hartmann and G. I. Gurdjieff as well as sacred and secular music from the Middle East, India, and Africa. The soloists include trumpeter Jack Schantz, saxophonist Howie Smith, trombonist Chris Anderson, guitarist Bob Fraser and pianist Dan Wall.

Chamber Music America awarded a New Works: Creation and Presentation Program grant to the Jack Schantz Jazz Unit to commission and present “The Way of the Sly Man.” Now in its ninth year, The New Works: Creation and Presentation Program supports composer/performer-led ensembles in the creation and presentation of original composition within the jazz idiom. New Works: Creation and Presentation is part of the Doris Duke Jazz Ensembles Project, made possible with funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Free and open to the public.

Blending a unique combination of improvisational comedy, education and audience participation, "Sex Signals" provides a provocative, in-your-face look at issues surrounding dating, sex and date rape on college campuses.

Through the use of humor, the show explores how mixed messages, gender role stereotypes and unrealistic fantasies contribute to misunderstandings between the sexes. Students are thus engaged in a candid discussion on dating and the realities of date rape as they are challenged to provide solutions that will better improve communications in interpersonal relationships. All of the performers have extensive training in interactive theater and sexual assault education.

The Office of International Programs (OIP) is currently working on planning events for International Education Week (IEW) from November 16 - 20, 2009. If you are interested in participating in the week's events or have an idea for a program that will promote intercultural awareness, please attend the IEW Planning Meeting in the OIP Conference Room (Polsky 483), from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., on Friday, October 16, 2009.

We are looking forward to holding three different types of events throughout the week. The first one would be educational. We would like to have lectures, panel discussions, presentations, etc. on different topics. In the past, we have discussed Aids, Female Genital Mutilation, Aiding the Victims of Natural Disasters, the Women of Saudi Arabia, etc. We would also like some interactive demonstrations where members of University of Akron Community can participate, such as dance lessons, how to make origami and other crafts, do calligraphy, cricket lessons, etc. The third category is entertaining/fun activities. We have had China Day, India Day and Saudi Arabia Day with pictures, movies, dance demonstrations, having students’ names written in different languages, food tasting, trying on different clothes, etc. If you would like to offer a similar program to those offered in the past, or have a new idea, please contact Rebekka Reusser.

Musicians and music lovers beware…Even the music you love could be damaging your hearing!
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
