Help ALPHA PHI OMEGA fold 1,000 paper cranes for Lydia's Cancer Hope! 1,000 cranes equals 1 wish to cure pediatric cancer! Oct. 27
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Alpha Phi Omega is looking for fellow students to join us on October 27th from 8-10pm as we fold 1,000 origami paper cranes. This event will take place in room 314 of the student union. The cranes will be donated to Lydia’s Cancer Hope and are going to be sent to Congress in Washington D.C. with letters asking for increased funding in research for childhood cancer. This project was brought to Alpha Phi Omegas attention by an article about a little girl name Lydia. Lydia's mother is a teacher at Wayne College.
According to Japanese folklore, 1000 origami paper cranes equals one’s wish. Lydia’s Cancer Hope's wish is to eradicate pediatric cancer, and the cranes symbolize the HOPE for a cure that comes with increased funding and awareness.
For more information and to read Lydia's story please visit http://lydiascancerhope.com

Under the Bush administration, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was waterboarded 183 times in March 2003.

What is torture?

Is it ever morally permissible to torture?

Could there ever be a situation in which a country could have a moral obligation to torture someone?

Chris Buzzelli will present on these important issues, which will be followed by an engaging student discussion.

Update: Reports of flu remain elevated
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image

UA continues to closely monitor flu activity on campus and encourages all to take steps to help prevent the spread of the virus.

As of Oct. 18, the University has learned of two confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus. Both students are recovering off campus.

UA’s Student Health Services continues to report elevated rates of people reporting flu-like symptoms for this time of year. This mirrors what the City of Akron Health Department is seeing across the broader community and what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting nationally.

“The majority of cases we are seeing in Student Health Services are reporting mild to moderate symptoms,” says Diane Fashinpaur, director of the department and a certified nurse practitioner. “They are recovering well, usually within three to five days. In many ways, the cases are similar to what we see with the seasonal flu; it’s just coming earlier than normal.”

UA is not testing for the virus, which is consistent with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Dr. Margo Erme, an epidemiologist at the Akron Health Department.

UA has asked students, faculty and staff to call Student Health Services at 330-972-7808 to report if they have flu symptoms. This will assist with monitoring efforts. In addition, medical professionals are on hand during normal business hours to answer questions.

See our flu information page for:

  • a table that tells you whether you have the flu or a cold;
  • instructions for what you should do if you come down with the flu; and
  • other helpful advice.

School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration presents Shakespeake's The Taming of the Shrew Oct. 22 - Oct. 24
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration opens its 2009–2010 season with Shakespeare’s most exciting romantic comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, in a production directed by UA theatre faculty member Dr. Susan Speers.
Dr. Speers places this boisterous battle of the sexes in the fantastical setting of the colorful Commedia dell' Arte. Some call her plain Kate, to others she is Kate the Cursed. Regardless of her reputation, Petruchio has fashioned a “shrewd” plan to tame her for his wife. However, Kate has ideas of her own, most of them vicious, and none involving marriage. Deceit and disguise add to the mayhem as mistaken identity and misunderstandings collide with hilarious consequences. This wild production of the Bard’s most outrageous comedy is full of slapstick humor, sharp wit, and a gaggle of colorful characters.
In the all-student cast, Akron’s own, senior India Burton , and sophomore Miranda Roth play Katherine on alternating nights. Sophomore, Robert S. Grant III plays her husband to be, Petruchio.
Performances are October 22-24 at 8 p.m. at the Paul A. Daum Theater in Kolbe Hall, on The University of Akron campus. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for seniors/UA faculty and staff/UA alumni/parents of UA students, and $6 for students. A group discount is available in advance for 10 or more patrons. For reservations call (330) 972-7895.

Help Ohio select a citation database: Scopus or ISI Web of Science

spacer image
OhioLINK is investigating solutions for a statewide multidisciplinary Index, Abstract, and Reference Citation Database. As part of this initiative, trials are available for OhioLINK member institutions through November 18, 2009. All UA faculty, students and staff are encouraged to explore these online resources and to contribute a personal evaluation of Scopus (Elsevier) and ISI Web of Science (Thomson Reuter). Comments and reviews from the campus community will help University Libraries determine which product we will encourage OhioLINK to license.

Access to these databases is available at the University Libraries Previews Project Page Preview Trial Databases at The University of Akron & Submit your evaluation.  Please contact Frank Bove (fjbove@uakron.edu), or Peter Linberger (pl@uakron.edu) for any questions.

Why should you do if you feel flu-like symptoms?
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
As we reported Monday, the number of people reporting flu-like symptoms on campus is elevated.

To help slow the spread of the virus here, UA continues to encourage students to self-isolate should they feel flu-like symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and our health experts in Student Health Services recommend that people with flu symptoms should remain isolated until their fever has receded for 24 hours without the aid of medicine.

If you are feeling flu-like symptoms, you should stay home and anticipate that your professors will expect you to:

  • follow the class attendance policy;
  • make up any work missed; and
  • inform the faculty member of an absence before missing a class, assignment or test, and that this notification should come via e-mail, so that it can be documented.

Other updates:

  • UA has formally asked the Ohio Department of Health to be a distribution site for the H1N1 vaccine. Should we receive approval, we will notify you immediately.
  • Our flu information page, updated regularly, has a wealth of information. You can find the page easily any time by typing “flu” into the search box on the UA home page.
  • The CDC flu site has extensive information as well, including preventive measures you can take to protect yourself.

Police: Hints to help prevent theft
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
badgeUA, like any community, receives reports of theft from time to time. UA’s police department, which operates 24-7 to protect campus and nearby student neighborhoods, offers these tips to help prevent theft:

  • Don’t leave books and valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. This includes that GPS unit attached to your windshield.
  • Lock vehicle doors and roll up windows. Many thefts are crimes of opportunity, and most could be easily prevented.
  • If your car is one valued by car thieves, consider installing an anti-theft device, an alarm or a vehicle-recovery system. Police across the region report that Hondas made between 1992 and 2000 are being targeted right now.
  • If you notice someone walking in a UA parking deck or lot, looking into car windows, let UA’s police department know. Call the department at 330-972-2911 at any hour.
  • Likewise, report to UAPD any car alarms that you hear going off.

By following these tips and by notifying our police any time you notice something unusual, you’ll be helping yourself and others.
