spacer image
We are excited to announce that the filmmaker Chyn Sung will be joining us for a Roundtable - discussion! Dr. Chyng Sun is a Clinical Associate Professor of Media Studies at New York University. In addition to her scholarly research on gender, sexuality and race in the media, Dr. Sun is the creator of the documentaries "Mickey Mouse Monopoly" and "Beyond Good and Evil". Her latest film "The Price of Pleasure" investigates the disturbing trend in contemporary pornography: as the industry has become more mainstream in recent years, the movies it produces have become harsher and more extreme, more overtly sexist and racist. How would these pornographic images affect our sexual imaginations and relationships? Dr. Chyng Sun explores the production, content, and consumption of pornography with the aim to help her audiences gain a holistic understanding of this controversial medium.

Hints to help prevent theft
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Like any community, UA receives reports of theft from time to time. UA’s police department, which operates 24-7 to protect campus and nearby student neighborhoods, offers these tips to help prevent theft:

  • Don’t leave books and valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. This includes that GPS unit attached to your windshield.

  • Lock vehicle doors and roll up windows. Many thefts are crimes of opportunity, and most could be easily prevented.

  • If your car is one valued by car thieves, consider installing an anti-theft device, an alarm or a vehicle-recovery system. Police across the region report that Hondas made between 1992 and 2000 are being targeted right now.

  • If you notice someone walking in a UA parking deck or lot, looking into car windows, let UA’s police department know. Call the department at 330-972-2911 at any hour.

  • Likewise, report to UAPD any car alarms that you hear going off.

By following these tips and by notifying our police any time you notice something unusual, you’ll be helping yourself and others.

Quickly gaining a reputation as one of today’s best solo performers and songwriters, Jason LeVasseur fuses together numerous influences creating a “charismatic propulsive acoustic pop” sound. His musical formula includes relatable, story-like lyrics backed by his gritty, soulful voice. Jason received several awards including Campus Activities Magazine’s Best Small Venue Performer three times, and has opened for bands such as Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, and John Mayer.

Meg Allison is a born storyteller and performer. She writes the melodies that stick with the lyrics you've lived. Her debut album, "Missing Piece" was produced by Chris Keup (Jason Mraz, Jonathan Rice) and Stewart Myers (Lifehouse, Rachel Yamagata) has been earning critical praise and her song "Old Soul" recently won Songwriters Universe Best Song competition. Meg recently picked from over 20,000 applicants to appear and was a finalist on USA network's "Nashville Star."

WHAT: food, fun, and games!
WHERE: Student Union Ballrooms at the University of Akron
WHEN: November 22, 2009 1PM - 10PM
WHY: To have fun and raise money for Akron Children's Hospital!
ADMISSION: $20 in advance / $25 at the door (or a game/toy donation)

Child's Play Charity is a gamer's organization started by Penny Arcade. They help collect toy and video game donations for local children's hospitals, so that children who are forced to spend time in hospitals have something to take their mind off of their illness. Nationwide, Child's Play has raised over $5 million in donations.

This year, the University of Akron student chapter of the ACM will be hosting a LAN party to benefit Child's Play and Akron Children's Hospital. There will be free food, PC, console and tabletop gaming, a guitar hero tournament, and much more!

Admission to the fun is only $20 in advance, or $25 at the door. We will also accept the equivalent in new or used toys or video games. Advance tickets will be available at tables in the student union during the week of November 16. Check this space soon for online registration.

A list of games will be available prior to the event. For now, if you have a specific game you want to play, leave us a message in the forums on our website or the wall of our facebook event, and we'll make it happen.

This event is open to everyone, including students, non-students, hardcore gamers, casual gamers, and n00bs. So please invite all of your friends!

You can RSVP for our event on facebook.

Check out Akron Children's Hospital's Amazon Wishlist and a list of suggested toys to donate
