Safety in mind: Smart things to do before you take off

The semester is winding down and the holiday season is ramping up, so as you prepare for winter recess, here are some simple, smart things you can do to enhance the safety and security of your campus home.

If you live off-campus:

  • Criminals look for an easy entry with good escape routes. Don’t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in the front window. It’s too tempting for them to smash the window and grab the wrapped packages.
  • Criminals look for occupancy cues like outdoor lights burning 24 hours a day, piled up newspapers, or advertising fliers on the doorknob. Use an inexpensive light timer when you are away, and ask a neighbor to keep the front of your home clean of papers and debris.
  • Criminals know to look for the hidden door key near the front entrance. Don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead, give the spare key to a trusted neighbor.
  • Criminals prefer to enter through unlocked doors or windows. Sliding windows that are not secure can be seen from distance. One holiday problem can occur when exterior Christmas light extension cords are run inside through a window and prevent it from being secured. Hire an electrician or handyman to install an inexpensive exterior outlet for your holiday lights.
  • Fasten air conditioner window units securely to the window sill or window frame.
  • Use random timers that automatically change what time your lights go on and off each night.
  • Ask a neighbor to park his or her car in your driveway and if it snows to make fresh tracks to your entrances.
  • Don’t leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like, “You’ve reached the Wilsons…we’re off skiing for the holidays…please leave a message and we’ll see you in January.” Criminals love to hear that they have plenty of time to break in.
  • After the holiday, don’t pile up empty gift boxes from your new computer, DVD player, or stereo receiver on the street for the garbage man. Criminals appreciate knowing that you have expensive gifts inside for them to steal. Break them down or cut them up to conceal the items better or take them to a recycling center. It is also not uncommon after a lucrative burglary, for the offender return to the scene targeting the new replacement products.

Mark, engrave and inventory your valuables before you leave to go back home.  Don’t forget to add any new items you receive over the holidays to your inventory list. Download this helpful valuables inventory brochure from the University of Akron Police Department.

If you live in a residence hall

  • Take home your valuable items: TV, video game systems, DVD, CDs, iPods, etc. But don’t load your vehicle the night before you leave.
  • Video your room for added documentation of your belongings.
  • Place valuables in a securable device while you are gone, if you cannot take them with you.
  • Don’t leave documents with personal information lying around your room.
  • Unplug electronic devices in case of power surges and to reduce the chance of a fire.
  • Take your aquatic animals home with you.

Taking these easy, smart steps will make your campus home more safe and secure while you are away. Enjoy your time off!
