Parking Update
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Parking Services has changed the designations for two lots on the north side of campus to improve the balance between resident and commuter spaces.

As of Monday, January 11th, motorists holding a resident (or “R”) permit, a commuter (“C”) permit or a faculty/staff (“F” or “P”) permit will be permitted to park in these spaces:

* level 4 of the North Campus Parking Deck; and

* the surface lot on the corner of Buchtel Avenue and Hill Street (near E.J. Thomas Hall and Guzzetta Hall) (show on map).

Level 5 of the North Campus Parking Deck, and the ramp leading up to level 5, will still be restricted to resident “R” permits only.

Also, as of Monday, Jan. 11, motorists with UA parking permits will no longer be permitted to park at the Akron Innovation Center, which is located south of Folk Hall at 411 and 441 Wolf Ledges Parkway. The exception is UA employees who work in the innovation center.

Moved by the searing images and stories out of Haiti, organizations and individuals on campus are mobilizing to support relief efforts. As plans are made, be mindful of reports about the logistical challenges of moving volunteers and donated items into and around Haiti, says Newt Engle, the assistant chief of UA’s Police Department.

Experts are urging groups to resist sending volunteers and donated items (shoes, clothing, etc.) to the country for the time being, a point made in a recent article on msnbc.com. The Center for International Disaster Information has more advice for groups and individuals wanting to assist in relief efforts.

Does God Exist? Jan. 26

One of the most debated questions by philosophers and non-philosophers alike, the question of the existence of God has troubled the most powerful minds for centuries.

The Philosophy Club, in its fist meeting for the year 2010, will be examining this very important question through student discussion.

All are welcome to attend. One need not be a philosophy major (or even have taken a philosophy class), there are no fees, and one need not be a member to attend. All that is required is an open and curious mind.

For more information, contact Philosophy Club President Nevin Johnson at UoAPhilosophyClub@gmail.com

UA Emily Davis Gallery Exhibition: Dialogue with an Ancient Forest Jan. 19 - Feb. 27

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Myers School of Art at The University of Akron presents a large-scale installation by New Jersey City University Art Department Chair Herb Rosenberg. The exhibition will take place at the Emily Davis Gallery, the upper gallery of which will be transformed by twelve nine-foot aluminum columns on wooden bases.

Functioning as an environmental awakening, these sculptures allow gallery visitors to meander through a metal forest, one that parallels those ancient groves of the past. The silent histories housed in ancient forests around the world are stirred by sublime sound-compositions created by the artist’s son, Andrew Rosenberg.

Exhibition dates: Tuesday, January 19 - Saturday, February 27, 2010

Come wander through the forest at The University of Akron’s Emily Davis Gallery. For more detailed information, please contact Vanessa Bordo, graduate assistant to the gallery. Rod Bengston, gallery director, may be reached at (330) 972-5950.

The Myers School is located at 150 E. Exchange Street in Akron, with gallery hours of Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday 10am to 5pm and Wednesday and Thursday, 10am to 9pm. University art galleries and lecture events are open to the public and admission is always free.

The Myers School of Art Emily Davis Gallery announces:
Collider 2: Camille Utterback

The Myers School of Art at The University of Akron will hold its second Collider exhibition from January 19 to February 27, 2010. The Collider Exhibition Series examines the impact, implications and inspiration of the phenomenon generally categorized under the umbrella term “New Media” within design practice and the fine arts. The exhibition will take place in the lower gallery of the Myers School’s Emily Davis Gallery.

A 2009 winner of the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, featured artist Camille Utterback is a pioneering artist and programmer in the field of interactive installation. Her work is an attempt to bridge the conceptual and the corporeal, seeking to understand how symbolic systems such as language reverberate on our physical selves. In addition to the gallery exhibition, Collider events include a residency program with the artist.

Public Lecture & Artist Reception: Tuesday, January 26, 6:30pm, Folk Hall Auditorium

Artist in Residency: Monday, January 25-Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Audience interaction with the works in Collider 2 allows for a blurring between the real and virtual; come explore the collision of art and technology at the Emily Davis Galley.

Also being accepted are applications for the Outstanding Student Research Award and nominations for the Faculty Mentor of the Year Award. The deadline for submissions for either award is Feb. 19.

The Outstanding Student Research Award is given to an individual whose research endeavor is judged to be an outstanding contribution to his or her field of study. A strong letter of support from the research adviser is necessary for consideration.

For the Faculty Mentor Award, mentoring can be defined as: A significant, long-term, beneficial effect on the academic and professional growth of another person, generally as a result of personal one-on-one contact. A mentor is one who offers knowledge, insight, perspective, or wisdom that is especially useful to the other person.

spacer image
You're invited to an early Mardi Gras celebration on Friday, Feb. 5, as The University of Akron hosts its fifth annual Hearts for Humanity Dinner Dance in the Student Union Ballroom.

Proceeds from the event will help defray the cost for UA students traveling to the Gulf Coast and Jamaica over Spring Break to assist in relief efforts. On past trips, students have taken on projects as wide ranging as installing drywall and floors, roofing and rebuilding athletic fields.

This year, in partnership with the national nonprofit group, Rebuilding Together, 110 UA students will be going to Acadiana and Calcasieu, near New Orleans, to help rebuild homes. A second group of approximately 28 UA students will travel to Jamaica to partner with Christian Service International Ministries to build a house or a school for a family or community in need.

Festivities at the Hearts for Humanity Dinner Dance will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar. A buffet featuring New Orleans-style food will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by dancing, oral and silent auctions, and the opportunity to have your photo taken with Zippy. The cost is $25 for UA family and friends, and $20 for UA students.

Reservations and/or donations may be made at the secured Web site at Hearts for Humanity or the Student Union Information Desk. Major credit cards will be accepted. Or, you can make a reservation with cash or your Zip Card at Rob's Café. The deadline for reservations is Tuesday, Feb. 2. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Sponsors of the event are University administration, Faculty Senate and Akron-AAUP. For more information, please call Leslie Wagner in the University College Dean's office at ext. 7908.
