UA Emily Davis Gallery Exhibition: Dialogue with an Ancient Forest Jan. 19 - Feb. 27

spacer image
The Myers School of Art at The University of Akron presents a large-scale installation by New Jersey City University Art Department Chair Herb Rosenberg. The exhibition will take place at the Emily Davis Gallery, the upper gallery of which will be transformed by twelve nine-foot aluminum columns on wooden bases.

Functioning as an environmental awakening, these sculptures allow gallery visitors to meander through a metal forest, one that parallels those ancient groves of the past. The silent histories housed in ancient forests around the world are stirred by sublime sound-compositions created by the artist’s son, Andrew Rosenberg.

Exhibition dates: Tuesday, January 19 - Saturday, February 27, 2010

Come wander through the forest at The University of Akron’s Emily Davis Gallery. For more detailed information, please contact Vanessa Bordo, graduate assistant to the gallery. Rod Bengston, gallery director, may be reached at (330) 972-5950.

The Myers School is located at 150 E. Exchange Street in Akron, with gallery hours of Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday 10am to 5pm and Wednesday and Thursday, 10am to 9pm. University art galleries and lecture events are open to the public and admission is always free.

The Myers School of Art Emily Davis Gallery announces:
Collider 2: Camille Utterback

The Myers School of Art at The University of Akron will hold its second Collider exhibition from January 19 to February 27, 2010. The Collider Exhibition Series examines the impact, implications and inspiration of the phenomenon generally categorized under the umbrella term “New Media” within design practice and the fine arts. The exhibition will take place in the lower gallery of the Myers School’s Emily Davis Gallery.

A 2009 winner of the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, featured artist Camille Utterback is a pioneering artist and programmer in the field of interactive installation. Her work is an attempt to bridge the conceptual and the corporeal, seeking to understand how symbolic systems such as language reverberate on our physical selves.

Audience interaction with the works in Collider 2 allows for a blurring between the real and virtual; come explore the collision of art and technology at the Emily Davis Galley. For more detailed information, please contact Vanessa Bordo, graduate assistant to the gallery. Rod Bengston, gallery director, may be reached at (330) 972-5950.

Associate and Baccalaureate Degree Candidates Must Apply Now for Summer 2010 Graduation
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Tuesday, February 16 is the Graduation Application deadline for students planning to graduate at the end of the Summer 2010 term with an Associate or Baccalaureate degree.

Undergraduate degree-seeking students can apply for graduation through ZipLine. This feature is complemented with a To Do List in the ZipLine Student Center. With both of these features, you can:
• verify the accuracy of your academic college, major(s) and minor(s), if applicable;
• receive directions for remedying problems that prevent the submission of a graduation application;
• allow you to track the progress of your degree clearance.
Step-by-step instructions for submitting a graduation application in ZipLine are available by clicking the Graduation Services link in the “Quick Links for Students” section of ZipLine.

If you are a graduate level student, you will need to submit a completed Advancement to Candidacy form to the Graduate School. You will be able to track the progress of your degree clearance in your To Do List.

If you plan on graduating in a later term, you may still apply now!! We are also accepting applications for Fall 2010!

To avoid the $100 late graduation application fee, don’t miss the deadline. Late applicants will need to obtain a memo of late permission from their dean.

Questions regarding the graduation application process may be directed to the Graduation Services office at commencement@uakron.edu.

Reminder about state smoking ban
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
To comply with Ohio's Smoke-Free Workplace Law, UA forbids smoking in any enclosed area, including buildings, parking decks and University vehicles. In order to comply with the requirements of this law and to help ensure that tobacco smoke does not enter any area in which smoking is prohibited, no smoking is permitted within 25 feet of an entranceway, window or ventilation system of any University building or enclosed area.

The law also requires that the University remove cigarette receptacles from areas on campus where smoking is prohibited. That means that smokers will have to fully extinguish their cigarettes when done and then place them in receptacles that will be located at least 25 feet from the entranceway of University buildings.

The University is asking all smokers to be mindful of the restrictions in and around buildings, to be cautious and courteous when discarding cigarettes and to refrain from removing cigarette receptacles from their intended locations. More information is available on the Ohio Department of Health's Web site.

An autographed photo of Cleveland Cavalier star LeBron James in action and a soccer ball signed by members of UA’s championship team will be among the items available for auction when the fifth annual Hearts for Humanity Dinner Dance is held on Friday, Feb. 5, in the Student Union Ballroom.

The Mardi Gras-themed event promises lots of fun, food and opportunities to lighten wallets — all to help defray expenses for students participating in UA’s alternative spring break trips to Louisiana and Jamaica in March.

Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar. A buffet with New Orleans-style food will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by oral and silent auctions, and opportunities to dance with Zippy or have pictures taken with UA’s mascot or with family and friends. Cost is $25 for UA family and friends, and $20 for UA students.

Emcee for the evening will be Dr. Charles Fey, vice president of student affairs. Dave Osterland, associate vice president of community relations, will serve once again as auctioneer.
To make reservations and/or donations, visit the secured Web site at Hearts for Humanity or the Student Union information Desk. Major credit cards will be accepted. Or, you can make a reservation with cash or your Zip Card at Rob's Café. The deadline for reservations is Tuesday, Feb. 2. No tickets will be sold at the door. For more information, call Leslie Wagner in the University College Dean’s office at 330-972-7908.

To learn how an individual or department can contribute toward sponsoring a student, contact Ron McDonald, director of leadership, development and special projects, at 330-972-7098 or rmcdonald@uakron.edu.
