Discover Law Day Feb. 27
12:00 pm - 3:15 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Thinking about law school? Visit Akron Law on February 27!

Right now, the legal profession does not reflect the expanding diversity of our society. That’s why the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) developed the DiscoverLaw.org campaign – to encourage racially and ethnically diverse students to discover career opportunities in law in high school and their first and second year of undergraduate school. Discovering law early in your career exploration makes it easier to choose a path that will lead you to a law degree.

LSAC is partnering with law schools across the nation, including The University of Akron School of Law, to host events encouraging more people to discover law.

THIS PROGRAM IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, AND IT IS OPEN TO ALL PROSPECTIVE LAW STUDENTS. Although the Discoverlaw.org campaign is targeted mainly at high school, early college, and community college students, there will also be content targeted at those who are considering starting law school within the next 1-2 years.

The program will include the following:

- Student/Alumni Panel Discussion
- Mock Law Class
- Concurrent Sessions
- Admissions/Financial Aid (for college juniors & seniors)
- Planning a Future in Law (for college freshmen & sophomores, high school students, and community college students)
- OPTIONAL building tours will run approximately every 10 minutes from noon to 12:40.

This program is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Aristotle's Theory of Mind: Philosophy Club Feb. 23

For the next Philosophy Club meeting, Michael Vimont will be presenting on Aristotle's theory of mind. The meeting will take place in the Student Union, room 308 at 5PM on Tuesday, February 23rd.

When we think of Aristotle, we can't help but wonder what relevance his theories could possibly have thousands of years later. Although his theories of physics, planetary motion, and biology have since been disproven, his theory of mind remains as a very possible and inspiring piece of work. What is that which we commonly refer to as the soul/mind? Is thinking a physical process, or a metaphysical process? Do animals think? All of these questions and more the theories of Aristotle can help us answer.

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The 2380 Project Film Festival is back for its fifth year and will take place on February 19th, 20th, and 21st at the University of Akron Student Union Gardner Theatre. The festival is sponsored by the University of Akron student and alumni organization, The 2380 Project. The organization was named for the distance between Hollywood, California and The University of Akron.

The 2380 Project Film Festival previously ran in 2006 and 2007 as the Akron Independent Film and Video Festival. After some festival reorganization and a slight name change we are back with new movies from Ohio filmmakers. This is a unique opportunity for students and residents to discover new talent as well as for regional artists who wish to display their work.

The opening night of the festival will begin with the premiere of The 2380 Project’s new film "Myra", a feature-length film written by Brandon Szabo and directed by Mike Campanizzi. The following two days will be full of short and feature films submitted over the past few months. The festival will finish off with an awards ceremony on Sunday followed by a second screening of "Myra" shortly after. Posters are available for both "Myra" and The Festival itself if you require them or would just like copies please contact Ben Sliwa at the e-mail provided below.

If you have any questions, please contact Ben Sliwa at bensliwa@yahoo.com or Frank Papa III at fap2@zips.uakron.edu.

Want to do something that could change a high school student’s life forever? Looking for a opportunity to volunteer for a Christian outreach program? 2. That they can hear the truth about life.

We live by this and enter into the lives of high school students looking to show them life and life to the fullest.
If this sounds like something that you would like to be a part of we would love to have you join us. We meet on Wednesdays in the student union in room 323 at 8:00pm-9:00pm

Record turnout for fundraiser to benefit alternative spring break trips Feb. 19
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image

spacer image
University students came out in large numbers to join faculty, staff and members of the community for the fifth annual Hearts for Humanity fundraiser on Feb. 5.

Nearly $12,318 was raised to help defray expenses for students going to Louisiana and Jamaica March 13-20 for alternative spring break trips to assist in ongoing relief efforts. That figure tops the $10,000 raised in 2009.

The Mardi Gras-themed event in the Student Union Ballroom drew more 300 attendees for the New Orleans-style food, silent and oral auctions, dancing and pictures with Zippy. The event was sponsored by University administration, Akron-AAUP and Faculty Senate.

“Even in the present economic conditions, it is gratifying to see the entire University community supporting our students' efforts,” says University College Dean Karla Mugler, who annually chairs the event. “I thank everyone involved, including our Associated Student Government members, who supported Hearts for Humanity so enthusiastically."

“Rebuilding Homes, Restoring Hope” is the theme for this year’s alternative spring break trips. The University, in partnership with the national nonprofit group, Rebuilding Together, will send 110 UA students to Acadiana and Calcasieu, near New Orleans. A second group of 28 UA students will travel to Jamaica to partner with Christian Service International Ministries.

Those who would still like to contribute can do so in one of two ways.

Donations can be made through the end of February at the Student Union Information Desk on the second floor, or, checks made payable to The University of Akron with “Hearts for Humanity” on the memo line can be sent to the attention of Leslie Wagner in the University College Dean's Office in Simmons Hall 302 (+6201).

To learn more about UA’s alternative spring break trips, contact Ron McDonald, director of leadership, development and special projects, at 330-972-7098 or rmcdonald@uakron.edu, or visit the Alternative Spring Break Web site.
