Associate and Baccalaureate Degree Candidates Must Apply Now for Summer 2010 Graduation
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Tuesday, February 16 is the Graduation Application deadline for students planning to graduate at the end of the Summer 2010 term with an Associate or Baccalaureate degree.

Undergraduate degree-seeking students can apply for graduation through ZipLine. This feature is complemented with a To Do List in the ZipLine Student Center. With both of these features, you can:
• verify the accuracy of your academic college, major(s) and minor(s), if applicable;
• receive directions for remedying problems that prevent the submission of a graduation application;
• allow you to track the progress of your degree clearance.
Step-by-step instructions for submitting a graduation application in ZipLine are available by clicking the Graduation Services link in the “Quick Links for Students” section of ZipLine.

If you are a graduate level student, you will need to submit a completed Advancement to Candidacy form to the Graduate School. You will be able to track the progress of your degree clearance in your To Do List.

If you plan on graduating in a later term, you may still apply now!! We are also accepting applications for Fall 2010!

To avoid the $100 late graduation application fee, don’t miss the deadline. Late applicants will need to obtain a memo of late permission from their dean.

Questions regarding the graduation application process may be directed to the Graduation Services office at commencement@uakron.edu.

Philosophy Club: Faculty presentation Feb. 9
5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
On Tuesday February 9th, in the Student Union, room 310, at 5:00 PM, UA philosophy faculty member Dr. Howard Ducharme will be giving a presentation entitled "The Axial Argument for the Origin of Science & Religion: Evolution and the Coming into Existence of Self-Conscious Moral Agents":

There are naturalistic theories to explain – but usually to explain away – religion. There are supernatural theories of religion to explain – and usually retain – discovery of Transcendent Reality. These two types of explanatory theories dominate both the popular and academic landscape; they are responsible for the confrontational head butting commonly known as “the culture wars” and “the war between science and religion”. The fatal weakness of both models is their axiomatic, a priori commitment to paradigmism -- either a naturalistic or supernal paradigm. Paradigmism is a post-Kantian, Modern, and Post-Modern assumption about the structure of “knowledge” and the “Blank Slate” mind. This weakness is exposed and undercut by identification of the necessary and sufficient conditions for a paradigm, any paradigm, to obtain – namely, the self-conscious mind. This epistemologically basic fact is a foundational truth claim, but more than that it is the intersection of epistemology and ontology. It is the direct knowledge of the self-conscious mind, the self-conscious moral agent (SCMA). The SCMA can be dated in Evolutionary history as the Axial Age. My Axial Age Argument draws from the work of John Hick and goes further to offer a third alternative and resolution of science and religion paradigm wars. The SCMA is necessary for the existence of both science and religion. - Dr. Howard Ducharme

The Myers School of Art Emily Davis Gallery announces:
Collider 2: Camille Utterback

The Myers School of Art at The University of Akron will hold its second Collider exhibition from January 19 to February 27, 2010. The Collider Exhibition Series examines the impact, implications and inspiration of the phenomenon generally categorized under the umbrella term “New Media” within design practice and the fine arts. The exhibition will take place in the lower gallery of the Myers School’s Emily Davis Gallery.

A 2009 winner of the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, featured artist Camille Utterback is a pioneering artist and programmer in the field of interactive installation. Her work is an attempt to bridge the conceptual and the corporeal, seeking to understand how symbolic systems such as language reverberate on our physical selves.

Audience interaction with the works in Collider 2 allows for a blurring between the real and virtual; come explore the collision of art and technology at the Emily Davis Galley. For more detailed information, please contact Vanessa Bordo, graduate assistant to the gallery. Rod Bengston, gallery director, may be reached at (330) 972-5950.

The Myers School is located at 150 E. Exchange Street in Akron, with gallery hours of Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday 10am to 5pm and Wednesday and Thursday, 10am to 9pm. University art galleries and lecture events are open to the public and admission is always free.

The Myers School of Art at The University of Akron presents a large-scale installation by New Jersey City University Art Department Chair Herb Rosenberg. The exhibition will take place at the Emily Davis Gallery, the upper gallery of which will be transformed by twelve nine-foot aluminum columns on wooden bases.

Functioning as an environmental awakening, these sculptures allow gallery visitors to meander through a metal forest, one that parallels those ancient groves of the past. The silent histories housed in ancient forests around the world are stirred by sublime sound-compositions created by the artist’s son, Andrew Rosenberg.

Exhibition dates: Tuesday, January 19 - Saturday, February 27, 2010

Come wander through the forest at The University of Akron’s Emily Davis Gallery.

This City Reads! Annual Day of Reading! - DELETE Feb. 10

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
We know that children learn what is important by watching what adults do. We read all the time – in classes, at work, for leisure, for emails, texting, playing computer games, developing our playlists, watch sport events, enjoying entertainment, driving!

Out of this conviction grew the Annual Day of Reading and a goal to have Akron identified as the Reading Capital of the World. To achieve this recognition, we are seeking 100,000 people in Summit County to read for at least 30 minutes on February 10. If we reach this goal, we will submit it to the Guinness Book of World Records. We know that more than 100,000 people in Summit County read every day, but we need your help to confirm this number.

Lend your voice to our call to read by visiting www.thiscityreads.org. Register today to pledge your intention to read on February 10 and this will count towards our reading number. You can also register your reading on February 10 at the same website.

For further information, please call the Office of the Provost, 330-972-7508.

Discover Law Day Feb. 27
12:00 pm - 3:15 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Thinking about law school? Visit Akron Law on February 27!

Right now, the legal profession does not reflect the expanding diversity of our society. That’s why the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) developed the DiscoverLaw.org campaign – to encourage racially and ethnically diverse students to discover career opportunities in law in high school and their first and second year of undergraduate school. Discovering law early in your career exploration makes it easier to choose a path that will lead you to a law degree.

LSAC is partnering with law schools across the nation, including The University of Akron School of Law, to host events encouraging more people to discover law.

THIS PROGRAM IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, AND IT IS OPEN TO ALL PROSPECTIVE LAW STUDENTS. Although the Discoverlaw.org campaign is targeted mainly at high school, early college, and community college students, there will also be content targeted at those who are considering starting law school within the next 1-2 years.

The program will include the following:

- Student/Alumni Panel Discussion
- Mock Law Class
- Concurrent Sessions
- Admissions/Financial Aid (for college juniors & seniors)
- Planning a Future in Law (for college freshmen & sophomores, high school students, and community college students)
- OPTIONAL building tours will run approximately every 10 minutes from noon to 12:40.

This program is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
