STUDENT UNION SOUTH ACCESS DETOUR

A detour will be implemented for one day on May 20 (May 21 is the rain date), for wheelchair access into the south entrance of the Student Union.

The temporary wheelchair access ramp will be shut down to install the permanent ramp. Wheelchair traffic will be temporarily re-routed to the lower level, wheelchair access entrance along Sumner Street, through the Buchtelite office, to the lower level elevators.

Reminder - Fall Graduation Application Deadline

For students planning on graduating at the end of the Fall 2004 term, the deadline to apply for graduation is Monday, May 17, 2004. Graduation application forms can be obtained in the lobby of the Student and Administrative Services Building or on the University Registrar’s website at http://www3.uakron.edu/registrar/grad.html/.

Late applicants will be assessed a $100 late fee and must present a memo of late permission from their dean. Any questions regarding the graduation application process may be directed to the Graduation Services Office at (330) 972-8300 or commencement@uakron.edu.

Please note that the application deadline for The Sallie Mae Fund Unmet Need Scholarship Program, which is offered under the Fund's Project Access Initiative, is Monday, May 31, 2004. The Sallie Mae Fund has committed $1 million to support this scholarship program in 2004.

This program is designed to supplement financial aid packages for low-income students by providing funds to cover financial need not met through typical financial aid channels, including grants, work-study, loans and other scholarships. The awards (ranging from $1,000 to $3,000) are not intended as a substitute for financial aid received from an institution.

Criteria:
- Applicants must be a United States citizen
- Applicants must have a family adjusted gross income for calendar year 2003 of $30,000 or less
- Applicants must demonstrate unmet financial need of at least $1,000 after the financial aid award package has been determined
- Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average between 2.5 and 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or GED average test score between 42 and 52
- Applicants must be a high school senior or graduate planning to enroll or a student already enrolled in a full-time* undergraduate course of study at an accredited postsecondary institution**

Application Process:
- Students must submit a completed application. Applications can be found at http://www.salliemaefund.org/.
- Students must submit their 2004-2005 Student Aid Report or Institutional Student Information Report
- Students must submit a financial aid award letter from the school they plan to attend (or are attending)
- Students must mail this information in one envelope to Scholarship America by Monday, May 31, 2004 to be considered for The Sallie Mae Unmet Need Scholarship Program. (Note: Material sent separately will not be considered.)

*Full-time study is defined as full-time enrollment through at least the 2004 fall term.
**Approved accredited institutions are defined as Title IV eligible, accredited, postsecondary two-or four-year colleges or universities, vocational, or technical schools in the United States or Puerto Rico.

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.
