March 15 – April 17, 2010: Small sculptures focus of Shoebox Exhibition at the Emily Davis Gallery of the UA Myers School of Art

OPENING RECEPTION: Wednesday, March 24, 4:30 p.m.
Folk Hall Atrium
Free and open to the public

GUEST LECTURER: Wednesday, March 24, 6:00 p.m.
Folk Hall Auditorium
Stephen Litchfield
UA Senior Lecturer, Sculptor

HOURS AND ADMISSION: MTFS 10-5, WTh 10-9
The Emily Davis Gallery is closed Sundays, university holidays.
Admission is always free.

The 10th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition features works by 81 artists from more than 14 countries. Following the March 24th reception, Stephen Litchfield will discuss the exhibition. Litchfield is a senior lecturer at The University of Akron and an assistant professor at Kent State University. The exhibition, lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Responding to the cumbersome nature of many sculpture exhibitions, professors at the University of Hawaii developed an exhibition of small-scale pieces to encourage ease of handling and broader audience exposure to this contemporary and striking art form. The diminutive sculptures in the exhibition demonstrate how artists have handled the challenges of space and scale dictated by the size of an ordinary shoebox. To create their sculptures, the artists have used almost every imaginable medium, ranging from steel and wood to found objects and human hair.

The exhibition is sponsored by the University of Hawaii Department of Art and Art History and the College of Arts and Humanities and supported by grants from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaii and by the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Gulab and Indru Watumull Grant for Museum Studies in the Arts.

Smart ways to have a fun and safe Spring Break
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
We are days from the start of Spring Break, and many of you have big plans for the week. Whether you’re bound for sun or slopes, make the week as safe as it will be memorable.

  • Secure your space here before you leave. Lock all doors and windows. Leave your answering machine on, but turn the ringer off (and don't leave a message saying that you are away). Leave a light on or better yet, put a light on a timer so that it appears as if someone is home. Put a hold on the mail (you can do it here online).
  • Don't pack your car the night before. It may take only a minute for a determined thief to break in.
  • Resist the urge to Twitter or Facebook what you will do over break. Tech savvy criminals will know your house/room is empty. Better to publish what a great time you had after you return.

Whether you are heading to the beaches or to the slopes:

  • Travel in groups. There's safety in numbers. If you go off on your own, tell someone when you will return. Take a cell phone, if possible (but remember that they may not work out of the country). You’re never too old for the buddy system.
  • If traveling abroad, find out before you leave whether your cell phone will work in the country you will visit. Once you arrive, take a minute to figure out how to notify local police if you find yourself in trouble.

Drink safely

  • If you are of age to drink, set a limit and stick to it. Don't drink on an empty stomach. Be on guard…alcohol affects judgment and lowers inhibitions, leading to risky behavior that would be avoided otherwise.
  • Don't leave a drink unattended. If you are away from your drink for a while, toss it. It's not worth the risk. Don’t leave drunk friends unattended either.
  • Consider alternating water between drinks.
  • Don’t drink and drive, ever. You know better.

Money matters

  • Call ahead to where you are staying to learn how you can secure your valuables. Don't slide them under the pillow and expect them to be secure. Ask if a safe is available. If not, perhaps it's best to leave them home.
  • Only bring what you need – leave fancy jewelry and extra credit cards at home.
  • Always carry identification. Make sure someone at home knows how to reach you (in case there's a family emergency).
  • Make photocopies of your identification, credit cards and itinerary. Bring one copy with you (put it in the safe) and leave another copy with someone at home.

Safety first

  • Know your surroundings. Carry a map. Plan your journeys. Tell others where you are going.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers some good advice for students traveling: Stay healthy with these tips.
  • If you are heading into sun country, slather up! Use sunscreen. Wear a hat. Avoid the sun at midday, and remember that tanning is a form of sun damage. Over time, it adds up.
  • Remember that what happens during Spring Break doesn't necessarily stay there. It could follow you back to Akron. This applies to citations, STDs, tattoos . . .

Check out some more Spring Break tips.
We look forward to your return after a safe and fun break!

Hunger Awareness Dinner March 30
6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Each night 12.6 million children in the United States go to bed hungry. These children which are the future are out fighting the pains of hunger while sleeping on empty stomachs. With each passing night their dreams of a bright future slowly die. You can be that change and bring them hope one small step at a time. The Hunger Awareness Dinner can be that one small step they need to bring hope and shine light on problems right here in the United States. Come out on March 30th 2010 with a small donation of $5 which will help feed our future as well as yourself (possibly) that night. At the least it will bring to your attention how 12.6 million children feel when they lay down for bed. When you give such a small donation you will receive a ticket with a number 1-4 corresponding with the meals that are available. The choice of the meals that night range from a nice sit down dinner, a sack lunch, a simple bagel and water or nothing but awareness in a bag. All the money made from ZPN’s First annual Hunger Awareness Dinner will be donated to feed our future and help children all around the United States go to bed with a stomach full of food and hope for tomorrow. If you have any questions or would like to help out please email me Kelsea Harris at zpncommunity@uakron.edu
