Federal Student Loan Process for 2010-11 Will Change from the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program to the Federal Dir
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Beginning summer 2010, the University joins thousands of other U.S. colleges and universities in the Federal Direct Student Loan Program. This move is mandated as a result of recent legislation passed by the federal government.
All new and returning students will need to complete and sign a new Master Promissory Note (MPN) for the Federal Direct Loan program. Visit www.StudentLoans.gov to complete the MPN. Remember… your student loans for 2010-11 cannot be disbursed without the new Master Promissory note being completed.
Have a question? Call 330-972-7032 or visit the Student Services Center on the first floor of Simmons Hall 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday –Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday.

The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation is sponsoring this free event.

College students are feeling more overwhelmed and stressed than fifteen years ago, according to a recent UCLA survey of college freshman. More than 30% of all college freshman report feeling overwhelmed - a great deal of the time. Thirty-eight percent of college women report feeling frequently overwhelmed.

At colleges nationwide, large percentages of college students are feeling overwhelmed, sad, hopeless and so depressed that they are unable to function.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for all those aged 15-24, and the second leading cause of death in college populations.

Why attend? Alison’s presentation capitalizes on the energy and dedication of young adults in the fight against stigma surrounding mental health disorders. She speaks to educate, enlighten, and empower all young adults to ensure their own mental health before it ever reaches a tragic stage.

FREE PIZZA and SOFT DRINKS following the presentation.

Refreshing but familiar. Confident but humble. Innovative yet classic. These are just a few words that come to mind when describing the voice, the music, the artist... Rudy Currence. Rudy's musical background spans almost every genre. He is often compared to the greats like Donnie Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Sam Cooke, but he also blends beautifully with the music of his contemporaries like Alicia Keys, John Legend, Ne-Yo, Ludacris, and Kanya West. Rudy has written songs for Mya, and had a song featured in the blockbuster hit movie “The Bourne Identity.” Rudy wrote and arranged “Let’s Play House” for Ray J’s CD "Raydiation.” Rudy released two full length CDs that received critical acclaim and an overwhelming response publicly. Most recently, Rudy signed with Disturbing Tha Peace Records and is currently working on a brand new, highly anticipated project.

The problem is large, but the solution is simple. Wearing shoes and practicing basic hygiene can prevent both infection and disease due to unsafe roads and contaminated soil. By imagining a life barefoot, we can all contribute to the awareness of these conditions. On April 8th at 6:30pm The University of Akron is banding together to walk barefoot for One Day Without Shoes. We will be meeting outside the Rec Center and walking barefoot to the rock by the student union there we will paint the rock and spread awareness about what a simple pair of shoes can do. We will then be ending the walk at the Residential Hall North Quad the "Barefoot Luau" to celebrate the moment when somebody gets their first pair of shoes.

Careers in Aging Week April 5 - April 7
12:01 pm - 12:59 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
National Careers in Aging Week will be held April 4-10
The Institute of Life-Span Development & Gerontology, in connection with this national event, will host an informational booth Noon to 1 p.m. April 5-7 by the Union Market, located in the Student Union.
Students interested in a Certificate in Gerontology may inquire at the booth. The certificate serves to complement the undergraduate or graduate degree, and add to the knowledge and skill set students will be able to offer after graduation.

 WHAT DOES GERONTOLOGY HAVE TO DO WITH A CAREER IN AGING?
Gerontology is the study of aging across the life span. It is interdisciplinary in its approach incorporating information from the fields of biology, psychology, sociology, home economics and family ecology, social work, physiology and many others. In addition to education and research about adulthood and aging, there is an emphasis on practice in order to more effectively provide service to adults and older adults and their families. Students in over 20 different Undergraduate and Graduate degree programs have received the Gerontology Certificate as part of their studies.

 WHY STUDY GERONTOLOGY?
The population of the United States is growing older. At present, one in eight persons is sixty-five or older. It is estimated that by 2020, one in five persons will be sixty-five or older. The increasing numbers of elderly persons will mean an increasing demand for individuals with the skills and insight gained from training in gerontology.
Gerontology also helps each person understand his/her own aging and how to age successfully. Personal concerns about the aging of family members may also be pursued in gerontological studies.

 HOW MANY CREDITS ARE REQUIRED?
20 credits are required for the Undergraduate, and 18 credits are required for the Graduate certificate. Plan ahead to obtain the certificate by using the certificate’s required courses as your electives!

 HOW DO I GET STARTED?
 Contact the Institute for Life-Span Development and Gerontology:
o Visit the booth between noon and 1 p.m., April 5-7 at the Union Market.
o Call (330) 972-7243, or e-mail lifespan@uakron.edu for more information.

The U.S. Census Bureau will be making a special effort to reach out to UA students between April 6-8 to encourage them to fill out and mail back the 2010 Census forms they have received.

U.S. Census Bureau staff will be at an information table in the Student Union between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on those dates to answer questions. There will also be giveaways of hats, water bottles and T-shirts for students who stop by the table.

It only takes a few minutes to complete the form and you can make a big difference for UA and the Akron area.
