You asked: Why can’t UA turn on the AC?
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
A: We all enjoyed the warm temperatures earlier in the week, except for the fact that it seemed even warmer indoors on campus.

If you have been wondering why UA can’t simply flip the switch and let the magic of modern air conditioning cool our brows, here’s the short answer…

UA uses a steam and chilled-water system to manage indoor temperatures in most campus buildings. It’s a cost-effective way to heat and cool a lot of buildings in close proximity. When the shift from heating to cooling occurs on April 15 of every year, it takes the system about a week to adjust.

So why not make the switch already? There’s a risk in shifting to air conditioning too soon, says Joe Gregor, who oversees campus maintenance. If a severe cold snap occurs after the switch, UA risks losing all the individual cooling coils in the buildings. The cost would be in the millions.

So Gregor and his team play the averages, choosing April 15 as the day to switch to cool air, and Oct. 15 to switch to heat, if the weather permits.

The U.S. Census Bureau is asking all UA students who have not done so to fill out and mail back the 2010 Census forms they have received.

It only takes a few minutes to complete the form, and with that “March to the Mailbox,” you can make a big difference for UA and the Akron area. Many decisions are based on census data, including federal and state funding for tuition and loan programs and research projects, where employers will travel to recruit new employees and fair-market rents.

Experienced students access degrees faster at Summit College
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron’s Summit College can save students 44 percent on their tuition through its new Technical Experience Assessment (TEA) portfolio preparation workshops. Workshops will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from May 26 to July 14.

Designed for students interested in building portfolios that would allow them to trade their work experience for college credit, the TEA workshops provide step-by-step guidance and instruction on assembling relevant experience into a logical, standardized format — the portfolio — for review by the faculty. Students studying criminal justice, early childhood development, fire protection, community service technology, emergency medical services, paralegal studies, hospitality management, customer information systems, office administration, marketing and sales and business management could earn up to 24 semester hours in technical coursework for their prior work experience in these areas.

In a recent report about prior learning programs in the United States, The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning revealed that adults enrolled in prior learning programs complete their programs of study and graduate at a much higher rate than other adult students, according to Susan Wynn, coordinator, TEA program at UA’s Summit College.

“The Technical Experience Assessment Program, while still in the pilot phase, has helped 12 students earn a combined total of 42 credit hours,” Wynn says. “One part-time student will be able to graduate one semester early because of earning credit by preparing portfolios for two courses.”

For more information, visit the Summit College home page or call ext. 2147.
