Saturday, May 15 is the Graduation Application deadline for students planning to graduate at the end of the Fall 2010 term with an Associate or Baccalaureate degree.

Undergraduate degree-seeking students can apply for graduation through ZipLine. This feature is complemented with a To Do List in the ZipLine Student Center. With both of these features, you can:
• verify the accuracy of your academic college, major(s) and minor(s), if applicable;
• receive directions for remedying problems that prevent the submission of a graduation application;
• allow you to track the progress of your degree clearance.
Step-by-step instructions for submitting a graduation application in ZipLine are available by clicking the Graduation Services link in the “Quick Links for Students” section of ZipLine.

If you are a graduate level student, you will need to submit a completed Advancement to Candidacy form to the Graduate School. You will be able to track the progress of your degree clearance in your To Do List.

Online submission of Spring 2011 graduation applications begins May 19th.

To avoid the $100 late graduation application fee, don’t miss the deadline. Late applicants will need to obtain a memo of late permission from their dean.

Questions regarding the graduation application process may be directed to the Graduation Services office at commencement@uakron.edu

The School of Law will hold a lecture in honor of the late Justice T. Modibo Ocran on Friday, May 14. The lecture, “The United Nations, Peacekeeping, and Post-Conflict Reconstruction of States” will be given by Dr. Muna B. Ndulo, professor of law and director of the Institute for African Development at Cornell University Law School.

T. Modibo Ocran was Dean’s Club Research Professor and Professor of Law Emeritus, at the School of Law. During his 23 years at the School of Law, Modibo taught public and private international law, comparative law, corporation law and jurisprudence. He developed a rich curriculum in international business law that included three advanced seminars addressing commercial law, investments, and trade regulation. In 2004, Ocran retired from the School of Law to accept the appointment as a Justice on the Supreme Court of Ghana – his native country. He pushed for the expansion of human rights in Ghana, and used the constitution to further the cause of political stability and national integration in his native land.

Dr. Ndulo’s lecture will examine the role of United Nations Peacekeeping operations in the reconstruction of failed and failing states and in the resolution of conflicts, as well as the challenges peace keepers face as they go about their duty of bringing peace to troubled countries. It will look at the conditions necessary for successful peace keeping, the role of external actors, and the reintegration of combatants into society.

The Ballroom Stars had a great semester representing The University of Akron from state to state. Starting their season in Ann Arbor, Michigan at The University of Michigan's "Rose Ball"; later competing in Columbus, Ohio, at "The Arnold Dance Sport Classic." They then moved forward to South Bend, Ind., for Notre Dame's "Irish Dance Sport Gala"; finally finishing strong in Evanston, Ill., at the "Northwestern Ballroom Classic".

All together as a group, these Stars placed 27 times and collected a grand total of 26 ribbons with their dance partners this spring semester. Marisha Daniels (University of Akron) collected 11 ribbons with Luis Cruz (University of Akron), 3 ribbons with James Hammond (University of Michigan), 3 ribbons with Chengyi Lin (Northwestern University), and 1 ribbon with Rantea Thompson (University of Akron). Rachel Arnold (University Akron) collected 5 ribbons with Laura Slate (University Akron). Then as a team Marisha Daniels, Rantea Thompson, Rachel Arnold, Laura Slate, and Spencer Vadner from Northwestern University each collected a ribbon in the American Team Match placing 5th over all.

Although their season is over, they continue to practice so they can come back strong in the fall and continue to keep The University of Akron on the map within the world of Competitive Ballroom Dancing; hoping to host a competitive ballroom dancing competition at The University of Akron sometime soon.

Remember these names because when you see them you will cry FAME.
