Police: Increase in burglaries tied to unlocked windows, doors

Burglars in recent days have been taking advantage of open windows and doors in several Akron neighborhoods, including ones near campus.

The thieves are simply cutting screens to gain entry. In most cases, no one is home.

“I know that with the higher temperatures, the temptation is to leave windows and doors open,” said University of Akron Assistant Police Chief Newt Engle. “But if you are leaving the house, we strongly recommend locking all windows and doors first. Yes, the house may be hot when you return, but that’s better than being burglarized.”

University police and city police have assigned additional plainclothes officers to the affected neighborhoods.

If you see anything unusual, call the university police immediately at 330-972-2911 at any hour.

See further safety tips from our police.
