NSCS Members,

Do you like working with kids? Want to make a difference in the lives of students in the area? Your NSCS chapter officers are working on creating a mentorship program with a local high school. This is part of a national initiative by NSCS called PACE, or, Planning to Achieve Collegiate Success. This program is designed to address the falling rate of high school graduation by having chapters create mentoring programs for local students so that these students graduate high school and attend college. As a part of this program we will go to the high school a couple times a month, most likely once every two weeks, to help students with their school work, and talk to them about the opportunities and benefits that a college education can afford them. We will also be there to discuss any questions they may have about college or life in general. This program is meant to demonstrate to students the benefits of attending college and allowing us, as current college students, to show them what working hard in high school can result in. As well as the fact that college is a realistic and feasible goal for them all. We are still working out the details of the program but we wanted to let our members know about the program and what our plans were and see how many of you would like to be a part of this program. If you are interested in being a mentor for these students and showing them the path towards success, please contact your VP of PACE, Matt Phister, for more information about the program at MattPhister@aol.com. Our goal is to begin working with the students no later than October, thus if you are interested please contact Matt no later than September 5th. We look forward to establishing a great connection with you and with these young, promising students. Thanks for your time and have a great day!

Your NSCS Chapter Officers

Akron Racquetball Club is looking for new club members for the upcoming school year! The club meets twice a week, typically Wednesday and Thursdays from 6-9pm in the Ocasek Natatorium (ONAT) for open play and practice. Racquetball is a great way to stay in shape, meet new faces and relieve stress after a long day of class.
Last year, our club filled a collegiate team consisting of eight guys and eight ladies to compete in the Mid-East Racquetball Conference (MERC) and we plan on doing it again this year. We also play in some local tournaments, along with Collegiate Nationals in Arizona! Tournament play is encouraged but not necessary for participation in the club, just meet us at the courts and have some fun!
All skill levels are welcome, even those that have never held a racquet. If you are interested in more information, please contact the Club President, Allan Springer, at aws11@uakron.edu.
