The Phi Delta Epsilon Chapter of The University of Akron would like to invite all pre-medical students to attend our 2010 recruitment week events. We offer many different events ready to give everyone a taste of what our Fraternity is all about. We are looking to invite driven, Men and Women to join our organization. Phi Delta Epsilon takes pride in being the "One Stop Shop" to getting into Medical School. We greatly encourage all interested students to attend as many events as possible. We see attendence as a sign of commitment and it will be noted. Here is our event schedule for the week:

Monday, September 13, 2010 -- Ice Cream Social
Our first event of recruitment week will be an ice cream social to introducing potential members to our fraternity. We will be meeting at 6:45pm in B201 of the Auburn Science Building.

Tuesday, September 14, 2010 -- Project LINUS
For our second event, we will be making blankets for an organization called Project LINUS; it helps to provide fleece blankets for sick children in the hospital. We will meet again at 6:45pm outside of B201 of the Auburn Science Building.

Thursday, September 16, 2010 -- Guest Speaker
Dr. Ely, our new advisor to our fraternity will be speaking in Ballroom B in the Union at 6:45pm for our third fraternity event. He will be discussing medical school and will also give us advice for the future. This will give everyone a chance to get to know him if you haven't had him in class and will also help you with your journey.

Friday, September 17, 2010 -- BONFIRE EXTRAVAGANZA
Our final event will be a bonfire and corn maze at May's Farm in Atwater, Ohio. Transportation will be provided. We will meet at 5pm to gather everyone together at the honors circle. We will stay at the bonfire until around 10pm and should be back at the university around 11pm. This should be a fun event to wrap up recruitment week!

We hope to see you all at the upcoming events. We are excited for our new semester ahead, hope you are also! For any questions please feel free to contact us at ua.phide@gmail.com See You Soon!

Real Stories, Real College Students, Real Dialogue about Depression & Suicide Sept. 8
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students. The University of Akron’s Counseling Center is offering a workshop to individuals or groups interested in learning more about suicide and depression. Please join us on Wednesday, September 8th at 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. in 306 Simmons Hall for a video and discussion of real stories from real college students talking about suicide and depression.

Why attend? According to the U.S. Surgeon General's National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001), a "gatekeeper" is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and intervene appropriately. Campus suicide prevention gatekeepers can include parents, friends, student group leaders, classmates, coaches, neighbors, supervisors/employers, police officers, advisors, facilities staff, and others, who recognizes the symptoms and signs of depression and suicide and knows how to get help. Are you a gatekeeper?
