Welcome to The University of Akron! We’re delighted you are here.
Your safety is our priority. We have a full-time police department on campus to serve you. But your safety can be enhanced greatly by making good decisions. Here are some points to keep in mind whether you are on campus, at the mall or anywhere else you go:
- Travel with a friend, especially after dark. If you are on campus, our campus patrol will walk with you between points on campus from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. any night during the fall or spring semesters. Call the campus patrol service at 330-972-7263. It’s free!
Keep in mind that we have more than 200 emergency phones available across campus and in our parking decks. Most of the phones are topped with blue lights. When you pick up the handset, you are talking immediately with our campus police department.
- Keep your car and residence-hall rooms locked at all times, even if you step away for only a minute.
- Don’t leave valuables in plain view. This includes textbooks on the seat of your car.
Speaking of textbooks, we’re offering a free service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Aug. 23-27 outside of the Student Union bookstore. Bring your textbooks to our table and we’ll mark them with an invisible code that will make it easier for us to indentify you as the rightful owner of the books, should you and your books be separated.
You will meet many people in the weeks ahead, and many will become friends for life. But as you go about, please be cautious: The first couple of weeks of school in particular can be an exciting time as you develop new relationships. But take it slowly.
Don’t allow friends and new acquaintances to pressure you to engage in behaviors (i.e., sex, drugs, alcohol) that you feel are risky or that make you feel uncomfortable. You have the right to make healthy, informed choices based on your own values and feelings.
We want you to have a great time here. Make this year your most memorable one in part by making good decisions. Be safe, responsible and have fun!

PS: If we may help you, call us at 330-972-2911 at any hour. In fact, it may be a good idea to program that number into your cell phone. Of course, in an emergency, call 9-1-1.
