Phishing, Spam emails: Be suspicious by default Sept. 27 - Oct. 21
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Information Technology Services is warning students, faculty and staff to disregard and delete any e-mails that ask for personal information like passwords, bank accounts, Social Security numbers, ATM information, etc., even if the e-mail appears to come from a University of Akron e-mail address. These messages are usually from an unknown source outside of the University, and they are an attempt to fraudulently obtain sensitive information in order to assume the recipient's identity.

Recently there have been a number of Phishing attempts on campus, in particular a claim that “you have won the Kentucky Lottery” and a claim about payment to an ATM card.

Other people have received suspicious emails that were worded so as to seem like legitimate business correspondence and included attachments that likely contained some kind of malware. This has become a pretty common form of attack. The attachments may be in various formats including-but-not-limited-to Office document types, pdf, or html.

A few tips to stay secure:
• Be suspicious by default. Do not open, forward, or respond to suspicious emails.
• Never respond to requests for personal information or give out your personal financial information via e-mail or in a pop-up window
• Do not visit sites via links imbedded in emails requesting personal information. Use bookmarks or type in the URL that you know is valid (i.e., for your bank, ebay, etc.)
• Do not open attachments from suspicious emails.
• Do not be put at ease by language that suggests a concern for your security
• Do not give your password to anyone including employees of The University of Akron. No one needs to know your password even to assist you with problems using the University's services.
• If someone claims to work for the University and claims to need your password, report this to Support Center staff immediately at 330-972-6888.
For more information on how to identify phishing scams and to how to recognize fraudulent web links, visit: http://www.uakron.edu/its/learning/training/Phishing.php
If you responded to an e-mail request to provide a password or have questions, contact the UA Support Desk at ext. 6888 to change your password.

About half of the world lives on less than $2.50 a day. According to the United Nations, 25,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes. Around a billion people cannot read a book or write their own name.

In the next Philosophy Club meeting, Nevin Johnson will argue that all of us need to do much more in order to satisfy our moral obligations to the poor. Do not come to this meeting if you aren't looking for a wake-up call.

Come Build Your Own Cardboard Shanty Town! Oct. 4

spacer image
spacer image
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be homeless? Campus Habitat for Humanity will be hosting an event in honor of World Habitat Day on October 4th. Here we will allow fellow students to build a shanty town out of cardboard boxes to understand what it feels like to live in poverty for a few hours.

At this time, we will also be holding a donation drive to raise funds towards Project M.I.S.S.I.O.N. (Making Insufficient Shelters Scarce In Our Neighborhood). The goal of this project is to build a Habitat house here in the Akron area (Johnston St.). Campus Habitat has already raised over half of their $80,000 goal and would like to start building within the current school year. Even a small contribution will make a huge difference! If you gave up that candy bar or coffee on October 4th and donated the money to Habitat instead, it could be used to buy items necessary to the construction of this home!

Feel free to stop by the area by the fountain outside of Bierce library any time between 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm on October 4th and give Habitat a hand!
