Why does literacy matter? It is linked to nearly every major socioeconomic crisis today. Children who cannot read are statistically more likely as adults to suffer poor health, struggle in the job market, rely on government assistance, and find themselves in the criminal justice system.

Help Akron’s Pierian Chapter of Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society as they collaborate with First Book, an organization that provides children in need with access to new and low cost books.
Stop by one of our tables to donate $2 or donate a gently-used children’s book and make a bookmark for a child living in the Akron area.

UA Spring Break Gulf Coast Service Trip Nov. 9

For the sixth year the UA community returns to the Gulf Coast for Spring Break to help those communities and families still struggling to recover from the worst natural disaster in U.S history. We are joining two Louisiana communities, Calcasieu and Acadiana, and helping families reclaim their lives by helping to restore homes still ravaged by hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ike.

This is a great way to spend Spring Break 2011! Help others, make new friends, and spend an evening or two in New Orleans! The cost of the trip (transportation, accommodations, meals) is $400.00. With fundraising, the total cost of the trip will likely be less.
