Seven easy ways to secure your possessions for Winter Break and beyond
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
By Paul Callahan, assistant vice president for campus safety and chief of the UA Police Department

I know you are eager to get finals behind you and to head home for the holidays. In your haste, don’t overlook seven simple steps that will help ensure that your possessions remain in your possession.

  1. Don’t pack your car the night before you leave. You don’t want to tempt someone; even if a criminal can’t break in, he or she could damage your locks or window seals. Why risk it?
  2. Take home your electronics. Burglaries in campus neighborhoods tend to increase over Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks, when criminals know that many students are away. If you are going to be away from your campus home for a period of time, take your games, TVs and other electronics with you. If you are unable to take them with you, place them out of sight in your house.
  3. Lock your doors and windows. It sounds obvious, but the number of break-ins would be reduced if doors and windows were routinely locked.
  4. Review your insurance for fire and theft protection. Your parents’ homeowner’s insurance may or may not cover your belongings, but how large is their deductible? If you find your coverage inadequate in anyway, we urge you to review this policy from HF&C. Ztrace Gold is one product that HF&C recommends and will reduce the deductible if a covered lap top is stolen. (Note: UA does not benefit or profit in any way from your participation in this policy.)
  5. Back up your data and protect your identity. Some things can’t be replaced easily in the event of theft, fire, or other damage and nothing can be more stressful than losing a semester’s worth of data and personal photos. Regularly back up your important files and keep it in a different location. Also consider purchasing theft-recovery software for your laptop such as Z-Trace Gold or LoJack. If your laptop is stolen, the next time the laptop connects to the Internet, information is captured and made available to law-enforcement officials to help recover your property. The software is sold online and in many stores.
  6. Make your house seem occupied. Put lights on a timer. Put the mail on hold. Check in periodically. Turn off the ringer to a landline phone, and don’t leave a message on the answering machine saying you’ll be away.
  7. Don’t tip your hand. Could someone see your posts on Facebook or Twitter and determine that your campus house is unoccupied?

One final tip: If you live off campus, take advantage of our new Office of Off-Campus Student Services.

Your safety is our top concern. It also must be your concern. As a university, we work very hard to prevent crime, fire, accidents and illness.  Please be our partner in keeping our community safe and your belongings secure by following these tips.

If you notice anything unusual, please notify us at any hour at 330-972-2911. Don’t be shy. It is amazing how often a seemingly minor tip leads to an arrest.

Good luck on finals!

Alpha Sigma Phi Holds Annual Black Lantern Processional Dec. 6
6:45 pm - 8:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity wish to inform you and your chapter that our fraternity will be re-enacting one of our oldest rituals on December 6, 2010 on Buchtel Commons. The ritual is called the Black Lantern Processional, which was born in the mid-1800's at Yale University. Members march in total silence wearing dark hooded robes, carrying Lanterns.

The processional has been passed down from the early days at Yale where it was used to announce candidates that had been selected for membership. The solemn ceremony is still carried out today by many chapters of Alpha Sigma Phi. It is used today as a memorial for deceased brothers and to commemorate the National Fraternity's founding.

The brotherhood wishes to stress that this fraternity ritual has no racial
overtones and is not in any way related to any supremacist organization. If you have interested in learning more about the Black Lantern Processional, visit http://alphasigamphi.webhop.org/blacklantern.html.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact John S. Cetor Jr. at (330) 592-2451 or jsc16@zips.uakron.edu.

The Black Lantern Processional can be viewed at 6:45 PM, when members will march from the Student Union to North Quad. Those watching are asked to respect the solemnity of the ceremony.

The Institute for Teaching and Learning and the College of Education will host an overview of problem-based learning on Friday, Dec. 3, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in Student Union 312. Problem-Based Learning is a teaching technique in which a curriculum is infused around a specific problem or challenge. The snow is falling and Brandywine ski resort in Peninsula is making more snow everyday!
If you're interested in skiing or snowboarding this season, the Brandywine package with the Ski Club is a great deal - it'll save you about $400!

But you must hurry - the deadline is NEXT FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10TH - that's only a week from today! Every year there are students that miss the deadline and are unable to participate, so don't wait!

COST - It's only $130 if you have your own equipment and $180 if you need to rent. If you've never been skiing or boarding before, don't worry - lessons are FREE.
TIME - Every Saturday from 6-10, you also get 3 FREE passes to use whenever and for whoever you want.

To sign up - head over to our website (click on additional information at the bottom of this post), and navigate to the Boston Mills Brandywine page at the top. There you will find an information sheet and three forms to take a look at. The first one contains instructions for the online sign up process (circled in red on the form). The other two forms (medical history and liability) need to be printed out, filled out, and turned into Marcia Weidknecht - her office is GDYR 213 (big glass building). If you have any questions feel free to email me.

Also on the website is information about our other two trips - the Out West trip and the 7 Springs trip. It's too late to sign up for the 2011 Out West trip, but there's still plenty of room for 7 Springs. It's a very popular trip with the students, for only $47 you get an awesome one day trip in February.

Help the UA Student Dietetic Association make this Christmas unforgettable for a family in need! Dec. 1 - Dec. 9
12:00 am - 5:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
This year the UA SDA has adopted a family through the Summit County Salvation Army. Our family is a little larger than last year so we need all of your help to make this a success! It is so easy during the holidays to get caught up in the stress of the season and forget how lucky we really are. Helping us help our family is a great way to remember what it really is about!

This year our family consists of a mother and her four children. One boy is 16, the next is 11, there is a 3 year old girl, and a 1 year old little boy. Both of the little children are requesting age-appropriate learning toys. The girl likes dolls, and is requesting a Princess Doll House. The little boy likes trucks and cars, and would like some models that make sounds or light up. The 11-year-old is asking for a Monopoly game, handheld videogames, and a remote-controlled car or truck. The 16 year old as well as the mother simply list "interests." The mother likes to read Stephen King and Danielle Steel, enjoys R&B music like Tisha Cole and Monica, and she would like any sort of bath products. The 16 year old likes basketball, hip-hop music such as Lil Wayne, needs a winter coat, and his favorite color is red. For size information or any questions please e-mail Clare Dyczkowski (ctd12@zips.uakron.edu) or Hope Severa (has23@zips.uakron.edu).

If your schedule is too pressed, understandably, to find time to go shopping for these specific items there are other ways that you can help out. The easiest way would be to donate! Monetary donations are one great way to do so. We can use this money to fill in the gaps of presents that have yet to be purchased. Gift cards for general stores such as Giant Eagle, WalMart, Target, and the like are also a great way to give our family some flexibility to purchase needed items or chose their own gifts. Also, nonperishable food items and cleaning supplies are always needed. Also, we will need wrapping paper, tape, and bows to wrap all of the fantastic presents we have collected. Please drop off any donations underneath the Christmas tree in SHS Main Office, room 215. There will be a decorated box designated for cash donations. Please drop off donations by Thursday December 9. Thank you all for your help and on behalf of the SDA, we hope you have a great holiday season!

Do you have a creative mind that likes to explore above and beyond what can be covered in a classroom? Do you ever find yourself asking question after question yet your curiosity is rarely satisfied? Perhaps you have actually taken steps to answer some of your own questions and have discovered exciting information that you want to share with an attentive audience? If you can answer any of the above questions with a “yes” then CUGSR may be waiting on you!
CUGSR is a forum for graduate and undergraduate students to present their research from various disciplines such as the arts, mathematics, business, social sciences, education, humanities, physical and life sciences, nursing, and engineering. Do you have a surplus of food in your dorm room? Do you have meal swipes left at the end of the week and are unsure what to get? Have you noticed the immensity of poor and homeless on the doorstep of this campus? If so, here is a solution.

"Serving with Swipes" is a program not only to aid the less fortunate, but also to help students realize how they can use their resources for others. Drop off canned, boxed, or packaged goods that are filling up your dorm room. Or simply go shopping for the poor with your extra swipes.
