The Student Financial Aid processing cycle is underway for the 2011-2012 academic years. Students may complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning January 1, 2011. Parents and students who are unable to complete federal tax forms early should estimate amounts as accurately as possible and fill out the FAFSA accordingly, correcting the information with actual amounts once the tax forms are complete. Students and parents may complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov . March 1, 2011 is the deadline to be considered for programs with limited funding such as the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) and Federal College Work Study (FCWS). For additional information visit the Office of Student Financial Aid online at www.uakron.edu/finaid

You're invited to an early Mardi Gras celebration on Friday, Feb. 4, as The University of Akron hosts its sixth annual Hearts for Humanity Dinner Dance in the Student Union Ballroom.

Proceeds from the event will help defray the cost for UA students traveling to the Gulf Coast to assist communities still struggling to recover from our nation’s worst natural disaster.

This year, in partnership with the national nonprofit group, Rebuilding Together, 110 UA students will use their Spring Break to help families in the Louisiana communities of Lake Charles and New Iberia restoring homes still ravaged by hurricane devastation.

Festivities at the Hearts for Humanity Dinner Dance will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar. A buffet featuring New Orleans-style food will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by great music, dancing, oral and silent auctions, and the opportunity to have your photo taken with Zippy. The cost is $25 for UA family, friends and community members, and $20 for UA students. Children under the age of 10 can join the fun for $10.

Reservations and/or donations may be made at the secure Hearts for Humanity
website or at the Student Union Information Desk. Major credit cards will be accepted. Or, you can make a reservation with cash or your Zip Card at Rob's Café. The deadline for reservations is Monday, Feb.1. No tickets will be sold at the door.

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum.
