spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Do you have a creative mind that likes to explore above and beyond what can be covered in a classroom? Do you ever find yourself asking question after question yet your curiosity is rarely satisfied? Perhaps you have actually taken steps to answer some of your own questions and have discovered exciting information that you want to share with an attentive audience? If you can answer any of the above questions with a “yes” then CUGSR may be waiting on you!
CUGSR is a forum for graduate and undergraduate students to present their research from various disciplines such as the arts, mathematics, business, social sciences, education, humanities, physical and life sciences, nursing, and engineering. Presenters from all institutions of higher learning are welcome along with professional organizations and businesses. The idea is to create an atmosphere conducive to our conference theme. The theme for this year’s 7th Annual Conference is Relevance, Connectivity and Productivity. Therefore, we encourage students, undergraduate and graduate alike, to embrace their curiosity and channel it into relevant research, connect with fellow students, faculty, staff, administration and businesses and to produce knowledge that will advance the disciplines.
Please don’t miss the opportunity to connect with potential employers, future co-workers, and perspective mentors throughout the conference and during the wonderful conference luncheon as well!!! The conference date is April 7th, 2011 and the call for proposals is now!!! If you are interested in CUGSR as a presenter or simply to attend, please checkout the website for more information. https://www.uakron.edu/gradsch/cugsr/index.dot

Whether or not you reach your goals in life depends entirely on how well you prepare for them and how badly you want them - Ronald E. McNair

College students who are considering study beyond the baccalaureate level can realize their dreams through the McNair Scholars Program at The University of Akron. Our goal is to help economically disadvantaged, first generation, and underrepresented undergraduates pursue graduate education through advising and mentoring, research and professional conference experiences, seminars and workshops.

The program seeks to attract undergraduates interested in the STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medically Related Disciplines). A particular focus of the McNair program is providing research opportunities for students. Students are paired with faculty mentors who are able to facilitate each student’s academic goals. Each year, McNair Scholars participate in academic year and summer activities that include preparation for graduate school selection, the application process, the graduate records examination, learning strategies, and research.

OPPORTUNITES AND INCENTIVES
• Skill building seminars in library services and research techniques
• Academic, career, and personal counseling
• Workshops focusing on how to prepare for and apply to graduate school
• Visit graduate programs
• Receive assistance with graduate admission and financial aid application forms
• Summer research opportunity with a faculty mentor
• Present your research at local, regional, and/or national McNair conferences
• A research training allowance of $2,800 during the eight-week summer research experience

Please visit, call, email or see the website for more information!!!!

Off-Campus Street Light Repairs Jan. 3 - Aug. 12

spacer image
Do you live in University Park and off-campus, and have nearby street lights that are flickering or out? We might be able to help you.

With the Lights Help Project, our purpose is to make University Park safer by repairing street lights, making it more difficult for knuckleheads to get away with committing crimes. We have a representative walk around the neighborhood 4-5 nights per week and mark out or flickering lights by wrapping a pink ribbon around the pole they're attached to. A report is then filed to Ohio Edison, and they typically fix the malfunctioning light within three days.

We also notify the City of Akron when something is obstructing lights, such as overgrown trees. They tend to remove the obstruction(s) in a couple of weeks.

You can be a part of this. We are always looking for volunteers to report whenever a light is malfunctioning near their homes. All the information we need is the approximate address and whether it's flickering, out, or if something is obstructing it. A representative will come out and look at the light and make sure the problem is fixed ASAP.

If you see something that needs looked at, contact us at lightshelp@gmail.com or call us at (330) 212-0241.

Use of Career Services Linked to Job Offers
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Spotlight Online for Career Services Professionals, June 23, 2010
NACE’s 2010 Student Survey shows a strong link between use of career services and a student’s ability to get a job offer.

Results show that, the more frequently a senior used career services, the more likely he/she would receive a job offer. Just under 29 percent of those who received job offers had not used the career center—meaning the remaining 71 percent with offers were career center users.

In addition, the study found that the likelihood of getting a job offer increased with the frequency of use, so that those who used the career center four or more times a semester were more likely to have job offers than those who used it once a semester.

Among those who had used the career center, the most services they were most likely to use were:
1. Resume writing/reviewing assistance (used by 70.1 percent of those using career services)
2. Career center job listings (66.2 percent)
3. Job-search assistance (62.3 percent)
4. Career counseling (51.3 percent)
5. Internship assistance (51.2 percent)

Resume writing help was not only the most used service, but also the most highly rated in terms of its helpfulness, followed by practice interview sessions (used only by a handful of users), job listings, and individual career counseling.

NACE’s 2010 Student Survey was conducted February 9, 2010, through April 30, 2010. More than 31,470 students representing more than 400 colleges and universities nationwide took part; more than 13,000 of those were graduating seniors. A final report on the study’s findings will be available later this year.

spacer image
You're invited to an early Mardi Gras celebration on Friday, Feb. 4, as The University of Akron hosts its sixth annual Hearts for Humanity Dinner Dance in the Student Union Ballroom.

Proceeds from the event will help defray the cost for UA students traveling to the Gulf Coast to assist communities still struggling to recover from our nation’s worst natural disaster.

This year, in partnership with the national nonprofit group, Rebuilding Together, 110 UA students will use their Spring Break to help families in the Louisiana communities of Lake Charles and New Iberia restoring homes still ravaged by hurricane devastation.

Festivities at the Hearts for Humanity Dinner Dance will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar. A buffet featuring New Orleans-style food will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by great music, dancing, oral and silent auctions, and the opportunity to have your photo taken with Zippy. New this year — Dessert Dash — featuring more than 40 gourmet desserts donated by local bakeries, restaurants and chefs in the area. The desserts will be on display for you to feast your eyes on and to determine which one you would like your table to have for dessert.

The cost is $20 for UA students and $25 for UA family, friends and community members. Children under the age of 10 can join the fun for $10.

Reservations and/or donations may be made at the secure Hearts for Humanity
website or at the Student Union Information Desk. Major credit cards will be accepted. Or, you can make a reservation with cash or your Zip Card at Rob's Café. The deadline for reservations is Monday, Feb.1. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Sponsors of the event are the Office of Academic Affairs, the Vice President for Student Affairs, Faculty Senate and Akron-AAUP. For more information, about the event, or to register for the alternative spring break trip, please contact Ron McDonald at 330-972-7098 or rmcdonald@uakron.edu.

Good day students. I would like to invite you all to our Philosophy Club this coming Tuesday, January 18 to take part in the most thought provoking club on campus.

We recently changed administration and are really excited to kick off the new semester with some great discussion and debate. We meet every other Tuesday and a couple times on a Wednesday to participate in a student led presentation and discussion about a selected topic in Philosophy.

Our first meeting will be presented by the club president, Dan Roach, on the topic of political philosophy. We would love for anyone interested to attend and give their two cents about what form of government is most ideal.

If there are any questions you can contact the club via email: uoaphilosophyclub@gmail.com ,or the club president: djr12@uakron.edu.

We hope to see many new faces and remember there is no requirement to join the discussion. There is no minimum attendance required and students of all majors are welcome. No previous philosophy experience required.

Remember, everyone is a philosopher!

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.

Questions about specific announcements should be made to the contact person/department/organization listed in the announcement.Your event will automatically be forwarded to the University's online calendar. The Zipmail Coordinator can be reached at x2837.
