spacer image
The Student Financial Aid processing cycle began Jan. 1 for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Students may now complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Parents and students who are unable to complete federal tax forms early should estimate amounts as accurately as possible and fill out the FAFSA accordingly, correcting the information with actual amounts once the tax forms are complete. Students and parents may complete the FAFSA online.
Tuesday, March 1, is the deadline to be considered for programs with limited funding, such as the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) and Federal College Work Study (FCWS).
For additional information, visit the Office of Student Financial Aid online

Off-Campus Street Light Repairs Jan. 15 - Aug. 11
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Do you live in University Park and off-campus, and have nearby street lights that are flickering or out? We might be able to help you.

With the Lights Help Project, our purpose is to make University Park safer by repairing street lights, making it more difficult for knuckleheads to get away with committing crimes. We have a representative walk around the neighborhood 4-5 nights per week and mark out or flickering lights by wrapping a pink ribbon around the pole they're attached to. A report is then filed to Ohio Edison, and they typically fix the malfunctioning light within three days.

We also notify the City of Akron when something is obstructing lights, such as overgrown trees. They tend to remove the obstruction(s) in a couple of weeks.

You can be a part of this. We are always looking for volunteers to report whenever a light is malfunctioning near their homes. All the information we need is the approximate address and whether it's flickering, out, or if something is obstructing it. A representative will come out and look at the light and make sure the problem is fixed ASAP.

If you see something that needs looked at, contact us at lightshelp@gmail.com or call us at (330) 212-0241.

Having a resume is important, and exceptional interviewing skills are a must, yet to stand out one must be creative. At this event, you will learn how to make your resume standout to obtain that leadership position or job. Interviewing is an art, thus you will learn the key steps to have a positive and productive interview.

UA Leads is a series of fun, interactive events that enhance and develop one’s leadership skills. This series consists of nine programs, where any university student can attend for free. Students that attend five out of the nine programs will be recognized at the L.I.F.E. awards next April. Through these events, students will gain valuable leadership skills. No matter where you are in your leadership development, you will be able to benefit from this program. Whether your leadership journey is just beginning or you have the ample experience to become president of a prestigious student organization, we can take you where you want to go! We highly encourage first year students to complete this series, as it is a great resume builder and it will improve your chances of getting that leadership position/ on campus job next year!

Several departments and student organizations are cosponsoring these leadership development opportunities. This leadership series is designed to “share ideas and skills to encourage campus leadership and involvement.”

Registration is not necessary to attend UA Leads events but, it is required if you wish to receive recognition at the L.I.F.E. Awards. You can register here http://www.sigmaua.com/ua-leads-1

Slam Poet The Asia Project

Date: Wednesday, February 2, 2011

Time: 8:00pm

Asia’s words have never been less than an honest testimonial to his life. His uncanny ability to combine humor and inspiration while provoking thought and self-reflection has won audiences all over. In 2006, Asia faced a battle with cancer. He didn’t know it then, but it would be the cancer that would save his life. Since then, Asia has been featured on Russell Simmons’ HBO Def Poetry, was named 2006 Performer of the Year, and has performed with legendary musical artists Mos Def, DMX, Jill Scott, KRS-1, and Dead Prez. Philosophy Club Feb. 1
5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
G'day everyone,

The philosophy club's second meeting is coming on Tuesday, March 2nd at 5pm in the Student Union room 316. The topic of this meeing will be presented by Marc Turoso on the topic of Bicameral Mind theory:

Throughout the past few hundred years, psychologists, philosophers and cognitive scientists of all kinds have been struggling to understand the phenomenon of consciousness. They have been trying to get a grasp on what it is inside our minds that gives us that sense of individuality. That aspect of thought which allows us to tell a kind of hypothetical story when we need to make a difficult decision or when we need to reflect upon the events of our past. In his bold work, The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind, the psychologist, Julian Jaynes, takes a new approach to reach an explanation of this seemingly fundamental aspect of our minds. He attempts to search for its origins in human development, which he believes are surprisingly not so long ago (Approximately 3000 years!). Through his analysis of archeological findings, the development of religious beliefs, and more importantly, some noticeably drastic changes in ancient writings, Jaynes theorizes that consciousness has developed as more of a byproduct of the transition into larger civilizations and an increase in the complexity of language.

I hope those who couldn't attend will be able to attend this time around and remember, there is no need to be a part of the club to come and join in the discussion.

If you can't make our formal meetings we will begin to meet on the off weeks that we don't have a formal meeting at 8pm on Thursdays at a TBA location.

If anyone has any questions or comments please email the club president at djr12@uakron.edu or at uoaphilosophyclub@gmail.com.

Remember, everyone is a philosopher!
