Students: You may qualify for the American Opportunity Tax Credit
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University's Office of Academic Affairs encourages you to examine whether you qualify for the American Opportunity Tax Credit.

This credit, which was originally included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and was recently extended for two years as part of the Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010, provides a maximum tax credit of $2,500 for qualified tuition and related expenses for the first four years of post-secondary education. This partially refundable tax credit, which replaced and expanded the HOPE tuition credit, is helping to make college more affordable for millions of middle-class families.

Unfortunately, in Ohio only 35 percent of eligible students claimed this credit in 2009. Clearly thousands of Ohioans are missing out on millions of dollars in tuition assistance. As you prepare your taxes, you may want to look into the AOTC as you claim 2010 higher education expenses on your April tax filings.

Learn more about the tax credit.

SUMMER-IN-GHANA PROGRAM 2011

What do you “see” when you hear the word “Africa”? What do you wish you knew about this exciting and, some would say, exotic continent that is made up of 53 independent countries? How is Africa similar to, or different from, other continents that you are familiar with – with respect to the culture, people, topography, fauna, education, business infrastructure, politics, etc?

Would you like an opportunity to investigate these questions yourself? If you do, then the CBA Summer-in-Ghana Program maybe what you are looking for. The summer 2011 trip to Ghana is designed to expose participants to the nation of Ghana, a small country of about 24 million people on the west coast of Africa. We will travel to, meet and interact with people in at least eight of Ghana’s ten regions, visit two of the major national parks, and observe park animals in their natural environment.

Also included in the trip will be visits to major business establishments, educational institutions, the national parliament, and Ghana’s major hydroelectric power dam and its lake, reported to be the largest man-made lake in the world. In addition, we will visit the slave trade era castles in Cape Coast and Elmina, both of which are UNESCO Heritage sites.

If you are interested in this exciting trip scheduled for May 15 – June 6, 2011, come to an informational session on Wednesday, February 23, at 3:15 p.m. in the School of Accountancy conference room in CBA 252. You can also contact Dr. Emeka Ofobike at 330-972-6901 or visit:

http://www3.uakron.edu/cba/ghanaprogram

The program is open to any UA student, staff, and faculty.
