Buchtel Common

The pedestrian walkway on Buchtel Common near the Dorothy Garrett Martin Fountain is being moved closer to Ritchie Hall, rather than the east side of the fountain, due to field conditions. This is a change from the notice in the July 2 Construction Update. Signs will be posted for the temporary walkways.

The intersection of Buchtel Common and Union Street is closed to pedestrian traffic for streetscape construction. Please follow posted signs for the temporary walkways.

On July 14, Buchtel Avenue will be closed for one day from College Street to the North Campus Parking Deck skywalk while a construction crew sets pre-cast concrete planks on the Honors Complex.

Reminder:

Union Street
Construction of the Union Street streetscape from Buchtel Common at Olin Hall to Buchtel Avenue is under way. To enter Olin Hall, use the east entrance. Please note that the sidewalks from Buchtel Avenue to Olin Hall have been removed – access Olin Hall from Buchtel Common or through Lot 15 east of Olin Hall.

College Street
Construction of the College Street streetscape has required restricting vehicles on the Circle below Buchtel Hall. The Circle is open only to emergency vehicles, deliveries to Bierce Library and for pick-ups and drop-offs in front of the College of Arts & Sciences building.

Get ready to roll out the barrel for the “Polka Party Fest” at Lock 3 Live! on Saturday, July 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Activities include kielbasa and pierogi-eating contests, polka dance competitions, and live entertainment, from traditional to “new wave” polka.

Festival attendees armed with their own accordions will gain free admission, and emcees Big Chuck and Little John will lead the accordion-toting polka partiers in a play-along segment, making this fest the “Night of a Thousand Accordions."

Grammy-winner Brave Combo, Bob Kravos & The Boys In The Band, the Eddie Rodick Orchestra, The Joe Fedorchak Orchestra, Tower City Drive, and Majestic Sound will fuel the polka-mania with even more live entertainment. Ethnic foods and baked goods will supplement the usual festival fare.

A $10.00 admission charge to the festival includes all concerts and entertainment associated with this event. Admission is free for children under 48 inches. If you bring a canned food item to Lock 3 park to benefit the Akron/Canton Food Bank, you can buy one ticket at full price and get the second ticket for half price.

Cash-only tickets are sold at the Lock 3 Live! gates 30 minutes before show time. For advance tickets, call the Akron Civic Theatre Box Office at (330) 253-2488 between 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday. Tickets are also available at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall Ticket Office at (330) 972-7570, or through Ticketmaster Centers or Charge-By-Phone at (330) 945-9400.

Lock 3 Live! park is located downtown on Main Street next to the Akron Civic Theatre, and operated by The University of Akron’s management team and E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.
