UA supports relief efforts in Japan and elsewhere
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
As a university with a global reach, UA has a long record of supporting those in need worldwide. In recent years, our students, faculty and staff have reached out to people in Haiti, Louisiana, Indonesia and other lands befallen by disaster.

Now, with news about new strife and suffering in Japan and elsewhere, UA is once again pulling together to help.

UA's Division of Student Engagement and Success is leading the effort, working with ShelterBox USA, a nonprofit that creates and distributes relief supplies to disaster zones. ShelterBox provides tents and other lifesaving supplies in watertight boxes to victims. Learn more.

The division has set a goal of $5,000. You can contribute today on UA's ShelterBox site.

Separately, you can donate to the Red Cross by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific.

Singer/Songwriter Jared Mahone

Date: Wednesday April 13, 2011

Time: 7:17 pm

Location: SU Starbucks

Jared Mahone is a groove-driven, blue-eyed soul machine with gospel/folk/blues/rock undertones, all in the service of solid songwriting. From the soil of stale Midwestern city life grew a talent rich with soul. The rhythmic chemistry and intensely focused performance style of Jared and his band results in a spiritual, soulful, thoughtful, and danceable presentation.

The Columbus, Ohio local music scene seems to be staying true to the art and progression of music and song craft. Just one listen at any one of the city-favorite clubs on O.S.U.’s campus will expose this healthy talent pool of bands who are devoted to enhancing the local culture one eclectic brick at a time. Jared Mahone and his band have joined the ranks of these great musicians to help rebuild upon a foundation of contagious songs and infectious rhythm.

The strong, soulful, and sincere vocals are enough to set Jared apart; the one-of-a-kind vocal beatbox showcases make the show extraordinary. Add to that the electrifying grooves, beats, and breaks offered by an intense rhythm section, and the band is equipped to restore the rhythm and pulse into the heart of any crowd, making rock and roll something we can once again dance to. But ultimately, it’s a message of hope that they intend to live and share on and off the stage.
