Outdoor warning system will be tested twice on Wednesday April 13
10:00 am - 6:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University's outdoor warning system will be tested at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 13. The system is routinely tested on the second Wednesday of every month unless threatening weather is expected.

You do not need to take any action when you hear Wednesday's test. This test is being conducted to ensure that faculty, staff and students are familiar with the siren.

If a tornado warning is issued for Summit County, the University's police department will activate the outdoor warning system. If you hear the sirens and it is not a test, you should seek shelter in the lowest accessible level of a nearby building. Lower-level stairwells provide excellent shelter areas, as long as they are not located on an outside wall of the building. In buildings without accessible lower levels, interior rooms, such as offices and restrooms, provide the best area to take shelter.

Do not take shelter in large rooms or areas such as gyms with large roof spans. Also, avoid sheltering in location in close proximity to glass windows and doors.

You need to stay in the shelter areas until given the all-clear signal. The all-clear signal is announced to the campus two ways:
• over the outdoor warning system;
• via networked loudspeakers in buildings that have that equipment; and
• over the campus two-way radio system to those individuals who have radios.

The tornado warning and all-clear signals will be communicated additional ways as new emergency notification technology becomes available.

The outdoor warning system is not intended to be heard inside buildings. UA is currently researching a system that would enable UA safety personnel to broadcast emergency messages inside buildings across campus.

spacer image
Hey Registered UA Student Org Presidents!

It’s SpringFest time again! Each registered student organization will have the opportunity to run their own carnival game again this year! A select number of games will be provided at no cost to you, but these are on a first come first serve basis.

Like last year, all proceeds will be split among those organizations that participate during April 29th, 2011 from 3pm to 7pm. We encourage student organizations to decorate their provided table with banners, fliers, table skirts, etc. This is a great opportunity to meet new students and get them interested in your student organization!

If you want to participate email jen11@zips.uakron.edu for an application that needs to be filled out by April 8th at 5:00pm.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Junell

A change is underway to improve your Google Apps at Akron account. With this change, your account will work more like a regular Google account. You will now have access to almost all of the Google services (Blogger, Picasa, Voice, Reader and many more).

It may take some time to complete the work. As such, it’s not possible to say exactly when an individual account will be finished. However, there will be no downtime and students will receive notice directly from Google when it has been completed, along with additional information about the changes. Also, a few students will receive notices about the need to rename some conflicting account names previously created for these applications.

As a university with a global reach, UA has a long record of supporting those in need worldwide. In recent years, our students, faculty and staff have reached out to people in Haiti, Louisiana, Indonesia and other lands befallen by disaster.

Now, with news about new strife and suffering in Japan and elsewhere, UA is once again pulling together to help.

UA's Division of Student Engagement and Success is leading the effort, working with ShelterBox USA, a nonprofit that creates and distributes relief supplies to disaster zones. ShelterBox provides tents and other lifesaving supplies in watertight boxes to victims.Learn more.

The division has set a goal of $5,000. You can contribute today onUA's ShelterBox site.

Separately, you can donate to the Red Cross by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific.

Ever thought that a concrete canoe could float? How about race 1100 meters against 13 other universities? Found out Saturday, April 15th at Portage Lakes!
The Concrete Canoe competition challenges students in all aspect of engineering. The team is required to design a lightweight concrete that must meet the specifications given in the rules. This year, the rules focus on a theme of sustainability. Once the concrete is designed the team will construct a 20 foot concrete canoe per the required specifications. The team will then race these canoes at the regional competition. The Concrete Canoe team is judged on a technical paper, oral presentation, aesthetics, various races, and the durability of the canoe. The University of Akron’s Concrete Canoe Team placed 1st in the regional competition last year and placed 9th in nation at nationals in 2010.
