EARTH DAY EVENT April 21
1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Get your 'green' on early with Environmental Akron and the Sierra Club in a special pre-Earth Day event. On April 21 we will be showing the award-winning documentary movie Gasland. There will be two showings starting at 1pm and 3pm. This is a movie you won't want to miss.

Bring some popcorn to enjoy the movie or just stop by our table outside the theater.

"The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown."

FREE at the Student Union at 1pm and 3pm.

UAkron students--WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The WCC is a national non-profit organization that recruits young men and women from all across the nation who have a desire to create social change in our world. The WCC’s goal is to implement projects that elicit global and cultural awareness, religious tolerance, environmental health, and dynamic educational opportunities for underprivileged students.

Our local chapter at The University of Akron has just begun! During the spring semester members of the WCC have invested in current affairs and currently working on The Pakistan Aid Project. With the focus in Japan, we strive to elicit social change by advocating for a less familiar cause. After intense monsoon rains and torrential flooding, Pakistan is struggling to provide for its people. The WCC seeks to exchange egocentrism for a strengthened resolve to serve others as we promote awareness of the Pakistani floods at The University of Akron.

Please take a moment to watch the short film, The Pakistani Flood: escaping the rising waters, and read the video description to learn more about the floods:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdEji91jnAs

Afterward, please fill out the survey below assessing your familiarity before and after watching the video:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dEZITnN5RWhZRnpqbjZHTGN6OE1PN2c6MQ

This is the most important step—the survey submitted is completely anonymous so please be truthful and answer the questions to the best of your ability. The purpose of the survey is multi-faceted and vital in determining the effectiveness of WCC outreach. We appreciate your willingness to help!

If you are interested in joining the WCC at The University of Akron send an email to aks50@zips.uakron.edu.

Please remain receptive to campus flyers—a WCC sponsored Pakistani Relief fundraiser is soon to come!

Do you have extra meal swipes left over on Saturday that you don't know what to get with?

Is your room full of food that you haven't eaten in a while and is just taking up space?

If so, here is an effective way to fix your little predicament! Give it to the poor through a newly organized food program called Serving with Swipes. There are boxes conveniently located in all of the Zees stores on campus in which to place your food. Any canned, boxed, or packaged foods will do. This is a great opportunity to use your resources for others.
