All UA students are invited to participate!

This year’s volume features a wide range of work and includes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and artwork from both UA students and other Ohioans. As we come down to the final week before Springfest 2011, volunteers are still needed in making this a successful event! Please consider volunteering for the second annual Springfest, which will take place on Coleman Common, April 29, 2011. Volunteers will be needed to work in a variety of different areas throughout the day to make this event a success. Additionally, volunteers are still needed to work pre registration tables in both the Polsky Building and the Student Union during the week (April 25- April 29) before the event.

If you are interested in assisting to make the second annual Springfest a success, please identify you interest in volunteering. Volunteers shifts are available throughout the day, 7-9 a.m.; 9-11 a.m.; 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; 1-3 p.m.; 3-5 p.m.; 5-7 p.m.; 7-9 p.m.; and 9-11 p.m., with evening shifts and the pre registration tables (10 a.m.-12 pm; 12 pm-2-pm) during the week needing the most volunteers. Students in classes taught by Catherine Kenngott, history, and Kumiko Tomita, modern languages, from The University of Akron, will hold a fundraiser on Friday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the first-floor atrium of the College of Arts and Sciences building. The Heart-to-Heart Project is raising funds for the Japanese Red Cross and its 2011 Japan Earthquake/Tsunami relief efforts.

Books, baskets of goodies, food, gift cards for Starbucks and Chipoltle, and calligraphy and origami items will all be available for a donation. Commemorative T-shirts are available for a $15 donation.

A Mouthful of Birds is part of The Dionysos Project, a three year exploration of the Dionysos myth in performance. Dionysos acts as the plays muse by causing each character’s central transformation. Documentation of this multi-year process is being recorded and edited by UA faculty member Anthony Samangy and will appear on the University of Akron Theatre, Dance and Arts Administration Facebook page.

Some of the play’s most significant issues will be discussed by James Slowiak as he takes part in Panel on Feminist Methods Across the Disciplines, co-sponsored by the Woman’s Studies Program and The Active Research Project. The men of Phi Sigma Kappa will be hosting our 3rd annual “Miss Phi Sig Beauty Pageant” on Thursday April 28th, 2011 in the Student Union Ballroom. “The Miss Phi Sig Beauty Pageant” is going to be a friendly competition for all sororities on campus to show their true beauty.

Tickets $3 in advance on sale in the student union
$5 at the door


The pageant will be treated like a Miss America Pageant: which includes introductions, talent portion, evening gown wear, a beachwear theme and question and answer impromptu. Out of all the participants, the top five will be participating in another Q&A session to see who will be crowned Miss Phi Sig 2011. All proceeds will be donated to our national philanthropy, the Special Olympics. Along with the pageant there will be drawing for people to purchase tickets.

This Weekend in Zips Athletics!

The Zips Softball Team will continue their home schedule this weekend with four home games!

On Friday, April 22 the Zips will play a doubleheader against the Eastern Michigan Eagles. The first game will start at 1:00pm with the second game starting at 3:00pm. Both games will be held at Lee Jackson Softball Field.

On Saturday, April 23 Akron Softball will hold their annual "Strike out Cancer Game" against the Central Michigan Chippewas! Pink Akron Softball T-Shirts will be available for $10 and a pink-themed basket will be raffled off. All youth in attendance will receive FREE pizza and pop! All proceeds from the event will benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00pm at Lee Jackson Softball Field.

The Zips will take on the Central Michigan Chippewas again on Sunday, April 24. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm at Lee Jackson Softball Field. Admission to all softball games is FREE.'


The Zips Baseball Team will host a weekend series against the Miami RedHawks this weekend! The first game of the series will be held Friday, April 22 and is scheduled to start at 3:00pm at Lee Jackson Baseball Field. Admission to this game is FREE to all fans.

The teams will also play on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24. First pitch for both of these games is scheduled for 1:00pm at Lee Jackson Baseball Field. Admission to both of these games is FREE!

The Ohio Collegiate Music Education Association (OCMEA) is holding a Drawing fundraiser on Friday, April 29th at 12:05 pm in order to provide all members with the opportunity to become acquainted with leaders in the music education profession through participation in programs, demonstrations, discussions, workshops, and performances planned by this chapter.

Drawing includes a school supplies basket and restaurant gift cards.
