Residence Hall Student Move-Out
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Resident students will be moving out from May 2 through May 8, 2010. We encourage all students moving during final exams to plan ahead.

To make your move easier, North Quad residents (Bulger, Honors/Orr, Ritchie, Sisler-McFawn and Spanton) are encouraged to use the North Quad Parking Deck (Lot #26). South Quad students are encouraged to use lots adjacent to their buildings. Exchange Street residents are encouraged to use the metered spaces by Gallucci or Exchange. Quaker Square residents are encouraged to use Lot #70 at Quaker Square. There will be carts available for your use at each Service Desk for loading and unloading.

For the safety of personal belongings, students are encouraged to secure their vehicles and attend their rooms while loading. Loading Passes are available at all front desks. They are only valid for ONE DAY and must be displayed in the vehicle. However, these passes are not valid in ADA parking spaces or fire lanes. Unattended vehicles may be ticketed.

Non-residents, faculty and staff should be aware there will be increased vehicular and pedestrian traffic in residential areas during this time.

Police: Strict enforcement weekend tonight and tomorrow
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
As part of our continuous effort to promote safety, University police are planning a strict-enforcement weekend tonight and tomorrow.

Additional police will be working in the neighborhood south of campus to assure that house parties remain under control and that all who are consuming alcohol are of age and off public property.

Officers and professionals from the University have been canvassing the neighborhood in recent days to discuss with students the significant legal responsibilities borne by party hosts.

For instance, everybody knows that it's an offense to provide alcohol to someone under age 21. The law makes no distinction as to how an under-aged guest acquires the alcohol. As the party host, you are responsible, whether you hand the underage guest a beer or whether the guest removes a beer from your cooler, or through any other means. Hosts should ID guests to check ages and allow entry to only those who were originally invited.

Also, city ordinances prohibit gatherings of more than 100. Police will ask gatherings over this limit to disperse peacefully.

"We do not desire to take the fun out of college," Chief Callahan says. "But we want parties and celebrations to remain under control so that there are no safety issues."

UA’s Student Health Services reminds graduating seniors that, as a result of the new health reform law, they can remain on their parents’ health care plan until their 26th birthday if the policy covers dependent children. This is true regardless of whether the graduating senior is unemployed, looking for a job, married, in school, living at home, or even if they are employed, but their employer does not offer coverage.  Learn more.

Remote Cash for Books Stations around Campus

Bookstore and Musicians on Call form partnership

Running low on money as the term draws to a close? Need some extra cash? Selling unwanted textbooks back to the bookstore at the end of the term is a great way to solve cash-flow problems. And now, the University of Akron Bookstores makes it easier than ever by bringing their Cash for Books program to remote locations around campus.

Starting May 2, 2011 the bookstore will have remote Cash for Books stations set up at various locations including: Bulger Hall and Galucchi Hall (students can also still sell their books back at the Union Bookstore, Polsky Bookstore and the Wayne College Bookstore . While the bookstore will buy unwanted books throughout the year, the best time is at the end of the term during finals week. Remember, the bookstore will buy back books regardless of where they were purchased. Just bring your books and student ID to the bookstore or one of the Cash for Books locations to get cash on the spot

Prices paid for books vary depending on whether an instructor is using the same textbook next term. If the bookstore knows a book will be reused, they can pay 50%, until they obtain the needed inventory. Once the bookstore has purchased the amount of books needed for next term, buy back prices will decrease.

To find out if a textbook is being used next term, visit the shopakronzips.com website or www.mybookvalue.com. Textbooks sold back to the bookstore also help reduce textbook expenses next term. The more textbooks the bookstore buys back now, the more used books it will have for sale next term, and used books are 25% less than new, printed textbooks.

Additionally, this spring, selling books back does even more than help put cash in your pocket it also helps support a worthy cause. Barnes & Noble College, which operates the University of Akron Bookstores, has entered into a long-term partnership with Musician On Call (MOC) to provide financial and promotional support to this worthy organization. Musicians On Call is a non-profit organization that delivers live, in-room performances by local musicians to patients at area hospitals. Barnes & Noble College will donate a portion of the Cash for Books dollars paid out at each of their more than 630 campus bookstores to MOC. Watch for more programs and promotions throughout the year in support of MOC.

For more information about the Cash for Books program, contact the bookstore at 330-972-7936.

***MUST BE A MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF COLLEGIATE SCHOLARS***

Win a $100 Barnes & Noble Gift Card!!!

The contest is open to The University of Akron NSCS members only. To enter the contest, write a brief essay addressing the following....

What can your NSCS chapter do to improve the member experience?
You should give specific suggestions for service activities, community/school involvement, social events, leadership opportunities, etc that you would be interested in participating in. You may also address additional questions such as:
- What were your expectations when you joined NSCS?
- What are you hoping to achieve from your membership?
- What would be your first step for the 2011-2012 school year, if you were an officer?

There is no word/page requirement for the essay. We are looking for quality ideas for improving our chapter and increasing member participation in chapter activities. Essays will be judged by the 2010-2011 officers, and the winner will be notified by email. Although we are not English professors grading the essay, try to correct all grammatical errors before submitting your answers, since it distracts from the content of the essay.

The deadline for submission is Friday, May 13th, 2011 at 11:59pm.

Include with the essay:
- Your name
- Your email address
- Your student status (Freshman, Sophomore, etc)
- Your major

*Email your essay to Alicia Nathaniel, NSCS Treasurer for the UA chapter at aab37@zips.uakron.edu.

*By submitting the essay, you agree that we may post your name as the winner on our chapter’s NSCS Facebook page. The winner will be notified by email before it is posted on Facebook.

Are you leaving for the summer, but have too much food to take back with you?

If so, here is a chance to lighten your load. Give the food to the nearest food pantry by donating it to Serving with Swipes. Serving with Swipes is a food program that accepts all non-perishable food items. Any boxed, canned, or packaged food will do. Just drop it off in any of the Zee's Conveinence stores.

Have any leftover meal swipes left over that you don't want to waste? Use it to buy food for the less fortunate and just drop it in the box. It is a great way to serve others with the plentiful resources we have as college students.
