The student who reported to UA police that he was robbed and assaulted in the North Campus Parking Deck on April 18 now says the crime did not occur.

"While we are relieved to have learned that the robbery and assault did not happen, I am troubled by the fact that a false police report was filed," said UA Police Chief Paul Callahan. "Filing a false police report is simply unacceptable, because it creates unnecessary anxiety and possibly panic."

Filing a false report is a violation of state law. Police have yet to file a charge, but the investigation continues.

Police planning strict-enforcement weekend

As part of our continuous effort to promote safety, University police are planning strict-enforcement weekends for the remainder of the semester for the entire campus.

Additional police will be working in the neighborhood south of campus to assure that house parties remain under control and that all who are consuming alcohol are of age and off public property.

Officers and professionals from the University will canvass the neighborhood in the days prior to the next two weekends to discuss with students the significant legal responsibilities borne by party hosts.

For instance, everybody knows that it's an offense to provide alcohol to someone under age 21. The law makes no distinction as to how an under-aged guest acquires the alcohol. As the party host, you are responsible, whether you hand the underage guest a beer or whether the guest removes a beer from your cooler, or through any other means. Hosts should ID guests to check ages and allow entry to only those who were originally invited.

Also, city ordinances prohibit gatherings of more than 100. Police will ask gatherings over this limit to disperse peacefully.

"We do not desire to take the fun out of college," Chief Callahan says. "But we want parties and celebrations to remain under control so that there are no safety issues."
