STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO CHECK THEIR FALL 2011 COURSE SCHEDULES VIA ZIPLINE Aug. 8
Time: n/a

spacer image
Students are encouraged to check their Fall 2011 schedules via ZipLine.

• Log into ZipLine with your UANet ID and password
• Click on the “Students” tab and then select “Student Center” under the “Access My section.”
• Information regarding course meeting times, days and room location is given in real-time; in other words, all information is up to date as it is retrieved.

The Office of the University Registrar sends an e-mail to the instructor of record and all enrolled students’ UANet e-mail address when there is a classroom change made in the course(s) they are enrolled. It is recommended that instructors and students check their UANet e-mail often for any important messages from the University as this will be the official means of notification used by the Office of the University Registrar.

Students may access a computer from many locations on campus including:

• Simmons Hall – Lobby
• Student Union – Laptop Check Out and Kiosks
• Residence Halls – Computer Labs
• Bierce Library – Computer Labs and Laptop Check Out
• The Polsky Building – Room 192
• Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences building – Computer Lab Room 103B and Kiosks in Atrium
• College of Business Administration Building – Room 102

Questions regarding your course schedule may be directed to the Student Services Center at ssc@uakron.edu.

New rules are in place for those who want to drop a class

spacer image
Starting in Fall 2011, the University has revised its rules for dropping or withdrawing from a course.

 For graduate and undergraduate students

  • You may drop a class up to Monday, Sept. 5. A "drop" will not appear on your transcript. The class simply "disappears."
  • You may withdraw from a class between Sept. 5 and Sunday, Oct. 9 through ZipLine (no signatures required).
  • If you do not drop or withdraw, you will receive a grade in the class.

If you withdraw, a "WD" will appear on your transcript. You should know that a withdrawal may affect your financial aid, eligibility for on-campus employment and eligibility for insurance. Speak with your adviser for details.

 For undergraduate students only

  • You must consult your academic adviser
    • before withdrawing from more than two courses before you have earned 32 credits; and
    • before withdrawing from more than two courses after you have earned 32 credits but before you have earned 64 credits.  (This does not count withdrawals that occurred before you earned 32 credits.)
  • You may not withdraw from more than four courses before you have earned 64 credits.  Until the fall 2013 semester, this does not apply to students who enrolled in the University before fall 2011.  Starting in the fall 2013 semester, it applies to every undergraduate student.
  • You may not withdraw from the same course more than twice.  Until the fall 2013 Semester, this does not apply to students who enrolled in the University before fall 2011.   Starting in the fall 2013 semester, it applies to every undergraduate student.
  • Exceptions may be made for extraordinary non-academic reasons (e.g., medical treatment or convalescence, military service). See your adviser.

The new rules are intended to help you graduate on time. Students who withdraw on a regular basis often do not finish their programs and earn degrees. Students who withdraw frequently tend to deplete their financial aid too early. Further, a pattern of withdrawals sends the wrong message to potential employers or to graduate schools. It says, “When the going gets rough, I quit.”

This is a summary of the new rules. Your adviser can answer specific questions.

Center for Service and Leadership is the new name for the Hub
spacer image

To provide UA students with an even more well rounded college experience, the Department of Student Life has expanded its program offerings in the areas of engagement, leadership and service.

To better reflect all that is offered, the department has adopted a new name — the Center for Service and Leadership — for the area on the first floor of the Student Union that was formerly known as the Hub.

Here’s some of what you’ll find:

Student organization pods

Zips Programming Network

Greek Life Office

Student Organization Resource Center (SOuRCe)

The Department of Student Life also has added a coordinator of civic engagement to oversee community outreach programs such as Make a Difference Day, Alternative Spring Break and UA’s participation in Ohio Day of Service, as well as other opportunities.

A coordinator of leadership programs will provide more leadership training and opportunities for all interested students.

“Through engagement and service programs on campus and in the community, we can offer our students opportunities to build skills that will serve them well with employers after they graduate,” says Anne Bruno, director of the Student Union.

Also available to students is OrgSync, an online community that serves as an involvement and organizational management tool for students, student organizations and their campus advisers. Already used by more than 200 campuses across the country, at UA, students can use OrgSync to share their interests and learn about the 200-plus organizations on campus. In turn, UA’s student organizations can reach out to the students that have indicated an interest in them.

“The Center for Service and Leadership is a destination place,” says Bruno. “We want all of our students to reach out to us and to learn by engaging in leadership and service opportunities.”
