Thank you for making last year’s first annual School Supply Drive such a tremendous success! Due to your generosity, we were able to help many children within our community!

This year you will have the opportunity to continue to make a difference by assisting Summit County Children’s Services (SCCS) in providing more than 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to children in the local community. Donation boxes can be found throughout campus in participating departments and in the College of Education Zook 132 from Wednesday, July 27 – Friday, August 5, 2011.

Printed lists of suggested items are available near the donation boxes or visit the SEAC website @ http://www.uakron.edu/seac/index.php and click on the Back to School link located on the left side.

For additional information contact Julie Harhay at X6967 or jharhay@uakron.edu.

By studying Stalin and his actions, we have a window into Russia before 1917 and into the Soviet Union after 1917. We will read about his early life as a Georgian nationalist and his becoming a professional revolutionary after his adoption of Marxism. He was important in the formation of the Bolshevik Party and its early work, especially in the Caucasus and the multi-ethnic oil town of Baku. Later Stalin was among the leadership that planned the Russian Revolution, formed the first Soviet government and successfully fought their Civil War. After Lenin's death, Stalin was part of a collective leadership of the Party from which he emerged as the undisputed leader by the beginning of the Five-Year Plan. We will examine Stalin's role in the Five-Year Plan, collectivization of agriculture, the Great Purges of the later 1930s, WWII and then during the early Cold War until his death in 1953. This course seeks to explore Stalin’s intellectual framework by reading much of his writings and taking them seriously. We want to understand how he understood his world.
