Steps to help prevent identity theft
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
UA's Division of Student Engagement and Success and the University's police department offer these seven steps to help you minimize your susceptibility to identity theft, provided by the Better Business Bureau:

  • Send sensitive mail to your parents’ home or a post office box. School mailboxes are not always secure and often can be accessed easily in a dorm or apartment.
  • Important documents should be stored under lock and key. This includes your Social Security card, passport and bank and credit card statements. Shred credit card offers and any paper documents that have sensitive financial information rather than just tossing them out.
  • Never lend your credit or debit card to anyone. Just say no if your friend wants to borrow your card or asks you to co-sign for a loan or financing for items like a TV.
  • Make sure your computer has up-to-date antivirus and spyware software. Always install any updates and patches to your computer’s operating system or browser software, which help keep your computer safe from any new advances by identity thieves online.
  • Always check your credit or debit card statements closely for any suspicious activity. The sooner you identify any potential fraud, the less you’ll suffer in the long run.
  • Check out unfamiliar websites with the BBB. Look for the BBB Accredited Business seal along with other trust seals; click on the seals to confirm that they are legitimate.
  • Check your credit report at least once a year. You are entitled to one free report a year from each of the three reporting bureaus: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. Look for any suspicious activity or inaccuracies. You can do this for free by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com.

For more advice on fighting fraud and managing personal finances, visit www.akron.bbb.org or call 330-253-4590.

Symposium, exhibit to mark 10th anniversary of 9-11
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
9-11 eventsThe terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 profoundly affected the American psyche, prompting many of the world’s psychologists to study subsequent phenomena. The media’s images of the attacks and stories of first responders and survivors continue to bring about a broad array of emotions among us all, ranging from patriotism to despair.

The University of Akron’s Center for the History of Psychology (CHP) will reflect upon and examine these effects Sept. 8 at a half-day symposium, “Resilience and Remembrance: 9/11 Ten Years Later,” and exhibit, “Resilience and Remembrance: Reflections on War, Trauma and Peace.”

“The events of 9/11 changed America and the world. Ten years later we continue to come to terms with what it all means,” says Dr. David Baker, Margaret Clark Morgan executive director of the Center for the History of Psychology and professor of psychology.

At the symposium, three speakers will address topics related to resilience and allow time for audience discussion.

  • Bonnie Kearns, a registered nurse who has traveled the world responding to disasters with the Red Cross and spent three weeks at Ground Zero, will talk about “Our Wonderful World of Change, Stress, Humor and Adventure” from 1 to 2 p.m.
  • Lt. Michael Woody, a retired Akron Police officer with several years of crisis intervention experience, will present, “CIT: More Than Just Training” from 2 to 3 p.m.
  • Dr. James Rogers, a professor of counseling at UA who volunteered as a counseling psychologist in New York City following the attacks, will speak about “Grace and Compassion: Professional and Personal Lessons from Ground Zero” from 3 to 4 p.m. The symposium will take place in UA’s Simmons Hall Auditorium.

An official unveiling of the exhibit, which includes artifacts from Ground Zero, will take place at CHP at 4:30 p.m., followed by a reception.

An Oral History Booth will be available for visitors to record their thoughts and feelings related to the events of Sept. 11 or other personal trauma.

Learn more about this event and other activities planned to observe the anniversary.

Counseling Center has resources to help prevent suicides Sept. 4 - Sept. 11
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
September 4-10 is National Suicide Prevention Week.

In the United States, one person completes suicide every 15 minutes. Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States and the 3rd leading cause of death among 15- to 24-years-olds.

It is estimated that more than 5 million people in the United States have been directly affected by a suicide. Experts believe that most suicidal individuals do not want to die. They just want to end the pain they are experiencing. Experts also know that suicidal crises tend to be brief. When suicidal behaviors are detected early, lives can be saved.

Free counseling and psychotherapy is provided for students at the Counseling Center.

Visit ULifeline, Half of Us and Transition Year.org on the Counseling Center website at for additional information about suicide prevention and ways to address emotional distress.

The Counseling Center also provides Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training for faculty, staff and students.

Think you’ve got a great idea for a business?

UA students and other aspiring entrepreneurs can pitch their business ideas and take a run at winning $10,000 in start-up funding at the Akron Creating (330) CEOs Entrepreneurship Summit 2011 on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.

Registration is free for the summit, which will be presented by LRMR Innovative Marketing and Branding in partnership with the University's College of Business Administration and the Office of Inclusion and Equity. LRMR, based in Cleveland, represents basketball star LeBron James and other professional athletes and entertainers.

A highlight of the summit is the 60-second Business Pitch Challenge for students and local aspiring entrepreneurs. Ten to 20 participants will be chosen to pitch their business ideas in 60 seconds or less and will compete for a chance to win $10,000 in start-up funding and eight weeks of business mentoring by 100 Urban Entrepreneurs.

A national nonprofit organization, 100 Urban Entrepreneurs is funded by several celebrities with a goal to finance and mentor 100 entrepreneurs from economically disadvantaged communities within 12 months. Often using the format of live business-pitch events in cities across the United States, the organization is highlighting the urban community's untapped business potential.

The morning workshops, titled How to Deliver a Winning Pitch and Creating a Business for Under $1,000, will feature individuals discussing how they launched their own companies. The afternoon will offer a panel discussion featuring the principals of LRMR and the 60-second Business Pitch Challenge. An Entrepreneurship Networking Luncheon will feature Jesse Itzler, co-founder of 100 Mile Group.

Check in for Entrepreneurship Summit 2011 begins at 8 a.m. The cost of the luncheon, which is optional, is $10 for UA students and $15 for nonstudents.

To register, visit: http://www.330ceos.com/. The registration deadline is Sept. 23.

The Department of Sport Science and Wellness Education, the Sport Science Academy, and Student Recreation and Wellness Services present the inaugural University of Akron Homecoming UA 5K run/walk on October 8th at 8am.
The course travels through the University of Akron campus and is mostly flat with a couple of rolling hills. This fast course starts on the outdoor track and has an exciting finish on the 50 yard line of Summa Field! First 500 entrants receive a 5K t-shirt.
This event has been made possible through the focused vision and diligent efforts of students in the Department of Sport Science and Wellness Education. Active Minds: Changing the Conversation on Mental Health
spacer image

spacer image
spacer image
Did you know that 25% of college students suffer from a diagnosable mental illness, almost half report feeling symptoms of depression, and 19% of students contemplate or attempt suicide each year? Still, over two-thirds of students do not seek any sort of help. Become a part of the movement to change the conversation on mental health by joining Active Minds.

Active Minds is the only student organization dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues in the student body. Through events, discussions, workships, and more, we seek to educate students about their mental health and mental illnesses, as well as work to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental health.

All undergraduate students and majors are welcome. For more information, contact Nita Duangjumpa at nd29@zips.uakron.edu or Alex Artman at ata5@zips.uakron.edu.
