Advice for securing your electronics
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
UA's Division of Student Engagement and Success and the University's police department offer these five points to help you minimize your susceptibility to technology theft, provided by the Better Business Bureau:

Keep it off the floor. Avoid putting your electronics on the floor. If you must put it down, place it between your feet or at least up against your leg, so that you’re aware of it.

Leave it at home. Determine if you really need your electronics during school hours or if they can wait until you get home.

Get it out of the car. Parked cars are a favorite target of thieves; don’t help them by leaving your property visible or even in the trunk.

Don’t leave it “for just a minute.” The people at the coffee shop seem nice, so you ask them to keep an eye out while you use the restroom. Don’t leave your laptop, iPad or other tablets unguarded — even for a minute.

Use bells and whistles. Depending on your security needs, an alarm can be a useful tool. Some laptop alarms sound when there’s unexpected motion, or when the computer moves outside a specified range around you. Or consider a kind of “lo-jack” for your laptop: a program that reports the location of your stolen laptop once it’s connected to the Internet.

Outdoor warning system
will be tested twice on Wednesday
Sept. 14

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University's outdoor warning system will be tested at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14. The system is routinely tested on the second Wednesday of every month unless threatening weather is expected.

You do not need to take any action when you hear Wednesday's test. This test is being conducted to ensure that students, faculty and staff are familiar with the siren.

The outdoor warning system can and will be used to alert people who are outdoors of different types of emergencies on or near campus.

If a tornado warning is issued for central Summit County, the University's police department will activate the outdoor warning system. If you hear the sirens and it is not a test, you should seek shelter in the lowest accessible level of a nearby building. Lower-level stairwells provide excellent shelter areas, as long as they are not located on an outside wall of the building. In buildings without accessible lower levels, interior rooms, such as offices and restrooms, provide the best area to take shelter.

Do not take shelter in large rooms or areas such as gyms with large roof spans. Also, avoid sheltering in location in close proximity to glass windows and doors.

You need to stay in the shelter areas until given the all-clear signal. The all-clear signal is announced to the campus three ways:

  • over the outdoor warning system.

  • over the campus two-way radio system to those individuals who have radios.

  • over the indoor warning system available in many buildings.

If you have questions, call the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety at 330-972-6866.

Think you’ve got a great idea for a business?

UA students and other aspiring entrepreneurs can pitch their business ideas and take a run at winning $10,000 in start-up funding at the Akron Creating (330) CEOs Entrepreneurship Summit 2011 on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.

Registration is free for the summit, which will be presented by LRMR Innovative Marketing and Branding in partnership with the University's College of Business Administration and the Office of Inclusion and Equity. LRMR, based in Cleveland, represents basketball star LeBron James and other professional athletes and entertainers.

A highlight of the summit is the 60-second Business Pitch Challenge for students and local aspiring entrepreneurs. Ten to 20 participants will be chosen to pitch their business ideas in 60 seconds or less and will compete for a chance to win $10,000 in start-up funding and eight weeks of business mentoring by 100 Urban Entrepreneurs.

A national nonprofit organization, 100 Urban Entrepreneurs is funded by several celebrities with a goal to finance and mentor 100 entrepreneurs from economically disadvantaged communities within 12 months. Often using the format of live business-pitch events in cities across the United States, the organization is highlighting the urban community's untapped business potential.

The morning workshops, titled How to Deliver a Winning Pitch and Creating a Business for Under $1,000, will feature individuals discussing how they launched their own companies. The afternoon will offer a panel discussion featuring the principals of LRMR and the 60-second Business Pitch Challenge. An Entrepreneurship Networking Luncheon will feature Jesse Itzler, co-founder of 100 Mile Group.

Check in for Entrepreneurship Summit 2011 begins at 8 a.m. The cost of the luncheon, which is optional, is $10 for UA students and $15 for nonstudents.

To register, visit: http://www.330ceos.com/. The registration deadline is Sept. 23.
