An easy way to reduce theft on campus
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Theft on college campuses is often a crime of opportunity — somebody takes advantage of an unattended laptop, an unlocked door or a GPS visible in the window of a parked car.

The number of thefts on campus would decline if students were to take an extra moment to secure their belongings:

  1. In the library, if you are going to step away from your table, take your laptop with you.
  2. Lock the door to your dorm room, even if you are running down the hall for a minute.
  3. In your car, tuck items of value out of sight. Yes, this includes the rack that holds your GPS. A thief may see the rack and assume that the GPS is in the car.

The University goes after those caught stealing. All students who were found responsible for theft last year were suspended. Nonstudents charged with theft are sent through the criminal justice system.

UA will continue to do its part to reduce the occurrence of thefts. Students can help their cause by taking that extra step to help secure their valuables.

Dear Students,

Governor Kasich will have an energy summit at Ohio State University September 21-22. He will be promoting various forms of ‘dirty’ energy. So, we at Environmental Akron have decided to support a rally organized by prominent Ohio environmental groups entitled ‘Rally for Ohio’s Energy Future’.

Members of the rally hope to convince Governor Kasich to consider alternative forms of energy such as solar, wind and geothermal! There will be multiple speakers, and music. Please join this effort by going to the rally at OSU and showing your support for a healthy environment!

Atheists discuss sex, love, and marriage Sept. 21
5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

spacer image
How do non-religious people approach sexual ethics, including premarital sex, homosexuality, contraception, masturbation, and pedophilia?

What is love? Is it a spiritual experience, or can it be described scientifically?

What should be the function of marriage in our society? Without a god, how do we decide who should have marriage rights and who should not?

The Secular Student Alliance at the University of Akron will tackle these questions and more, so stop by and be heard! All are welcome.

Think you’ve got a great idea for a business?

UA students and other aspiring entrepreneurs can pitch their business ideas and take a run at winning $10,000 in start-up funding at the Akron Creating (330) CEOs Entrepreneurship Summit 2011 on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.

Registration is free for the summit, which will be presented by LRMR Innovative Marketing and Branding in partnership with the University's College of Business Administration and the Office of Inclusion and Equity. LRMR, based in Cleveland, represents basketball star LeBron James and other professional athletes and entertainers.

A highlight of the summit is the 60-second Business Pitch Challenge for students and local aspiring entrepreneurs. Ten to 20 participants will be chosen to pitch their business ideas in 60 seconds or less and will compete for a chance to win $10,000 in start-up funding and eight weeks of business mentoring by 100 Urban Entrepreneurs.

A national nonprofit organization, 100 Urban Entrepreneurs is funded by several celebrities with a goal to finance and mentor 100 entrepreneurs from economically disadvantaged communities within 12 months. Often using the format of live business-pitch events in cities across the United States, the organization is highlighting the urban community's untapped business potential.

The morning workshops, titled How to Deliver a Winning Pitch and Creating a Business for Under $1,000, will feature individuals discussing how they launched their own companies. The afternoon will offer a panel discussion featuring the principals of LRMR and the 60-second Business Pitch Challenge. An Entrepreneurship Networking Luncheon will feature Jesse Itzler, co-founder of 100 Mile Group.

Check in for Entrepreneurship Summit 2011 begins at 8 a.m. The cost of the luncheon, which is optional, is $10 for UA students and $15 for nonstudents.

To register, visit: http://www.330ceos.com/. The registration deadline is Sept. 23.
