An easy way to reduce thefts on campus
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Theft on college campuses is often a crime of opportunity — somebody takes advantage of an unattended laptop, an unlocked door or a GPS visible in the window of a parked car.

The number of thefts on campus would decline if students were to take an extra moment to secure their belongings:

  1. In the library, if you are going to step away from your table, take your laptop with you.
  2. Lock the door to your dorm room, even if you are running down the hall for a minute.
  3. In your car, tuck items of value out of sight. Yes, this includes the rack that holds your GPS. A thief may see the rack and assume that the GPS is in the car.

The University goes after those caught stealing. All students who were found responsible for theft last year were suspended. Nonstudents charged with theft are sent through the criminal justice system.

UA will continue to do its part to reduce the occurrence of thefts. Students can help their cause by taking that extra step to help secure their valuables.

Come Participate in the First Annual National Model of the African Union Conference Oct. 27
9:00 am - 7:30 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Have you ever wondered what it would like to be a diplomat? Perhaps you wanted to learn more about international politics in general or Africa in specific? You are invited to participate in the First Annual Local Model African Union on Thursday, October 27. The Model is essentially a simulation of the proceedings of the African Union. It will provide a unique opportunity for students to study the role, structure, and performance of the African Union in the search for solutions to key economic, social, and political-security issues facing the African continent.

As a participant, you will be assigned one of 54 specific countries in Africa to represent. If you would like to represent a specific country, your request will be honored as much as possible. We are hoping to have three to four people represent each country. Your fellow representatives and you will be given a case and decide what stand your country would take on the specific issues in the case and prepare a one page resolution.

Through this simulation, participants will gain better understanding of the various determinants, capabilities, and constraints that shape the domestic & foreign policies of African countries, as well as the patterns of cooperation and conflict that characterize intra-African diplomacy. All interested students are welcome to participate!

The Model will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Ballroom of the Student Union with various activities and events through 7:30 p.m. If you are interested in participating, or you would like to know the exact schedule of events, please contact Prof. Enoch Damson, at damson@uakron.edu OR Chris Opoku-Agyeman at profkristof@yahoo.com.

In addition, if you are unable to participate in the Model, you are still invited to hear the address of the Guest of Honor, Her Excellency Ambassador Amina Salum Ali. She is the First and Permanent Female Representative of the African Union to the USA. She will be speaking in the Student Union Ballroom from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Please arrive at 10:00 a.m.

The above events are sponsored by Office of the President, Office of the Vice President for Student Engagement & Success, Office of the Chief of Staff, Office of the Provost, Women’s Resource Center, African Students Association, the Office of Inclusion & Equity, Pan African Studies Institute, and the Office of International Programs.

Got Food?

Ever feel like you got meal swipes, but NO need for junk food? Ever wonder how you as a poor college student can help those who aren't as well off as you? Well, if so, I got just the thing!

Join in the cause to brighten someone's day by doing what you normally do ever week. Use some of those EXTRA meal swipes (worth $5 at the Zees stores) to collect some food for the poor. Just BUY, BAG, and DROP any NON-PERISHABLE food items in the boxes in the Zees stores. They are collected and taken to the nearest food pantry.

Serving with Swipes: a great way to help those in need!
