Lot between Exchange and Schrank parking decks to close Oct. 24
Time: n/a

To increase pedestrian safety, the parking spaces on the west side of the area between the Exchange and Schrank decks will close permanently starting Monday, Oct. 24. This will create more space for motorists in the two-way driving lane between Carroll Street and the South Campus Deck.

Though we will lose about 21 spaces, safety will be enhanced with less congestion in the lane and there will be more space for pedestrians walking between central campus and the south quad.

Students and faculty from disciplines across campus are invited to form teams to represent The University of Akron in the 2012 Clean Energy Challenge sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. An information session about the competition will be held on Friday, Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. to noon in Student Union 335.

Teams competing in the Student Challenge of the Clean Energy Challenge will vie for a $100,000 grand prize, and an opportunity to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy's first-ever national business competition for university students. Eligibility is limited to applicants from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Kentucky and Wisconsin. One team will receive the $100,000 grand prize and move on to compete in the national contest in Washington, D.C., in summer 2012.

UA students and faculty in all departments of the College of Engineering as well as physics, chemistry, biology, business, law, and polymer science and polymer engineering are invited to participate.

From Nov. 1 through Dec. 5, teams can submit their applications through the Clean Energy Challenge iStart submission portal. For more information, contact Dr. Ajay Mahajan, associate dean of research in the College of Engineering at majay@uakron.edu, or Barry Rosenbaum, a senior fellow with The University of Akron Research Foundation, at barry@uakron.edu.

Teams will work closely with the technology transfer offices at their schools to identify a technology around which to develop their idea.

spacer image
Do you have a meal plan that leaves you with too many meal swipes to use up at the end of the week? Are you unsure of what to get, but don't want to waste you hard earned college funds? Well if so, here is the solution!!!

Serving with Swipes is a non-profit student organization in which you can use your unused meal swipes to donate food to the nearby food pantry. This is a great way to help those who are less fortunate while also learning not to be wasteful.

Just use your extra meal swipes at the Zees stores to purchase nonperishable, canned, or boxed foods. Drop them in the boxes located in the Zees stores at Exchange, Rob's Cafe, Quaker Square, or the Student Union.

Serving with Swipes-A great way to give back to the community and help the poor.

The Center for the History of Psychology welcomes Georgetown professor James Lamiell to campus as the Fall Colloquium Series continues. Join us on Tuesday, October 25th from 10-11 am in the CHP Reading Room as Dr. Lamiell presents an historical talk entitled “William Stern (1871-1938) and the Origin Myth of Differential Psychology”. This event is free and open to the public. A Q & A with light refreshments will follow in the lobby.

Dr. Lamiell earned his Ph.D. at Kansas State University in 1976, and joined the Georgetown faculty in 1982. His scholarly interests are in the history and philosophy of psychology. His early work focused on the psychology of subjective personality judgments, and he has also written extensively on methodological issues pertaining to personality research. His 2003 book highlights the historical contributions made by German psychologist and philosopher William Stern to the concept of individuality in twentieth century scientific psychology. Professor Lamiell has three times been named a Fulbright Senior Scholar to Germany (Heidelberg, 1990; Leipzig, 1998; Hamburg, 2004). In Hamburg, Lamiell was also Ernst Cassirer Visiting Professor for one semester of the 2003-2004 academic year. His newest book, printed in 2010, is based on a series of public lectures he gave in Hamburg, and offers a brief introduction to Stern's life and works.

The Center is located at 73 College, on the corner of College and Mill Streets. For further information, contact Dorothy Gruich directly at 330-972-7284 or gruich@uakron.edu.
